Peyton stared at my profile.

A long beat.

Then he let out a cold laugh.

“Kyle. I think Clover is your destiny. You two are perfect for each other.”

Kyle didn’t pick up on the tone at all. Just shot me that signature grin.

“I think he’s right. What do you think?”

I didn’t say no.

Kyle punched Peyton’s shoulder, casual and smug. “Preciate it, man. Thanks.”

I stood there, dazed, until Kyle’s voice pulled me back. I gave a few polite replies. Accepted his friend request.

It wasn’t until late that night, listening to Jolene on the phone with Peyton, that I finally understood what he’d

meant.

“You were right, baby.” Peyton’s voice drifted in from the balcony, wind humming in the background. “Clover

really is a copycat.”

Jolene, not realizing I’d gotten up to use the bathroom, laughed knowingly.

“Honestly, I get it. She likes you. You like me. So she copies me. Probably thinks it’ll get your attention.”

Half-asleep, I was still groggy.

Then Peyton’s voice came through again, furious.

“But this is too far. The outfits, whatever. But now she’s copying your profile picture? The one with the kitten holding the star and the flower? I designed that for you.”

I snapped fully awake.

Opened Facebook Messenger. Checked Jolene’s profile.

She’d changed her picture to match mine.

I hadn’t opened our chat since she got together with Peyton. Hadn’t had a reason to.

My fingers shook around the phone.

I looked at Jolene laughing on her bed, and suddenly she felt like a stranger. Her face blurred. Turned

unfamiliar.

I thought about Peyton defending her. Thought about the way he’d looked at me with disgust.

I closed the app.

Didn’t say a word.

But the next day, the two of them launched a full-blown campaign to throw me and Kyle together

My schedule got leaked by Jolene to Peyton. Peyton passed it to Kyle. And Kyle started spawning next to me

like a ridiculously attractive NPC.
