He Left Me in the Snow for His First Love. So I Left His Marriage Chapter 11

Two days later, my lawyer came to me looking helpless and hesitant.

“Mr. Pierce’s side… still won’t agree to sign the divorce agreement.”

“And… he fell when he was leaving. He fell down the stairs and broke a bone.”

I froze.

She said, “His face was cold at the time, but it was obvious his mind wasn’t there.”

“He missed a step. He’s in the hospital now.”

As soon as she finished speaking, my phone rang.

It was Ethan’s assistant.

“Miss Moore… could I trouble you to come see Mr. Pierce?”

“Mr. Pierce has been in a terrible state these past few days. He barely sleeps and works almost all night. He doesn’t go home either. Since you moved out, he rarely goes back. The last time he returned was to get the soup.”

I went quiet and looked at the pen on my desk.

My voice carried no emotion.

“What does that have to do with me?”

The other side clearly froze.

After one or two seconds of silence, there was a sharp crash, as if a glass had fallen to the floor.

Then the assistant cried out, “Mr. Pierce!”

I hung up.

Outside the window, the sky darkened. The clouds hung low.

That night, heavy rain fell.

It beat against the glass, dense and urgent.

Suddenly, someone knocked on the door.

I got up and opened it.

Ethan stood outside.

He was wearing a hospital gown, the blue-and-white striped fabric soaked through and clinging to him.

One leg was in a cast. He leaned on crutches and against the doorframe.

His face was so pale it looked bloodless, as if he might faint in the next second.

I was shocked.

“Are you trying to kill yourself?”

He stared at me without blinking. Rain dripped from the hair on his forehead.

Then, with the hand not holding a crutch, he slowly reached into his coat and pulled something out.

“Claire.” His voice was so hoarse it was almost hard to hear. “This is the ring you proposed with back then. I kept it safe the whole time.”

With difficulty, he bent the leg that wasn’t injured.

His knee hit the floor.

Holding that ring, he raised it toward me.

“Claire, give me one more chance.”

His voice shook.

“I’m begging you…”

The last words were almost forced out of his throat, carrying a sob he was trying to hold back.

Lightning flashed outside the window.

For one brief second, the light fell across his face.

I had never seen him with that expression.

On that face that was always calm, flawless, and capable of solving everything, there was something close to brokenness.

If it had been before, I probably would have hugged him already.

But now, I couldn’t help turning to look at the black window.

That day had been raining just as hard.

I had held up the pull tab from a soda can, crouched in front of him, and grinned like an idiot as I asked if he wanted to marry me.

He had frozen for a long time.

Then he bent down, pulled me up, and held me in his arms.

He said yes.

But time couldn’t go back.

I shook my head.

“No.”

He slowly bent forward.

I closed the door.
