He Left Me in the Rain for My Best Friend Chapter 06

The day after my mother was buried, Caleb Sterling’s and Ivy Harper’s acceptance letters arrived.

Both were from Alden University.

Ivy Harper came to my house on purpose to show me.

“Elena Brooks, the things Caleb said at the hospital were just to comfort you because you were so broken.”

“We’re going to the same school and the same major. We’ll spend so much time together. He likes me too. We’ll definitely end up together.”

I gave a cold laugh.

“If you’re so confident, why go through so much trouble to frame me? Why hurt yourself just to hurt me?”

She shrugged.

“I don’t think I lost anything. People can say whatever they want. After a month, after a year, who’ll remember?”

“So what if everyone thinks I was the other woman and went to a clinic for a pregnancy? As long as Caleb feels sorry for me, that’s enough.”

I asked her, “Why do you hate me so much? Was our friendship of more than ten years fake?”

She gently touched her acceptance letter.

“Because you’re stupid and clueless. After more than ten years, you still don’t understand why I became friends with you.”

“If Caleb didn’t exist, maybe we could’ve stayed friends forever. I just don’t understand why he likes you. No brains, no looks, and your family is poor.”

So that was it.

In elementary school, I was slow to catch on, and my grades were always at the bottom.

Once, the math teacher called me to the whiteboard.

I cried while trying to solve the problem.

My classmates laughed below.

A boy even threw chalk at the back of my head.

Ivy secretly told me the answer.

The teacher found out, and we both had to stand as punishment.

I felt guilty.

She patted my head.

“People who get in trouble together are real friends.”

After school that evening, she spent an hour explaining the problem to me without any impatience.

That was the day I told myself Ivy Harper would be my best friend for life.

After hearing this, Ivy said, “I forgot about that a long time ago.”

I nodded.

“No matter what, thank you.”

My calm scared her instead.

“Elena Brooks, don’t think you can pull anything else. Your mom died because she had bad luck. It has nothing to do with anyone.”

But she didn’t dare look directly at my mother’s portrait.

The sudden knock on the door made her whole body jump.

When I opened the door, Caleb Sterling walked in, holding up his phone.

The moment Ivy came in, I had called Caleb.

Ivy’s face lost all color.

“Caleb, let me explain…”

Caleb’s eyes were cold and unfocused.

“Don’t call me that. You don’t deserve it.”

“Get out. Don’t show up in front of us again.”

Ivy shook her head and grabbed his arm.

“Caleb, I…”

“Don’t make me use force.”

Caleb shook her off and grabbed her by the throat.

Ivy nodded with red eyes and said she would leave right away.

But then she suddenly turned and dropped to her knees in front of me.

“Elena, I was wrong. I promise I won’t fight you for Caleb anymore. Can we keep being friends? What I said just now was only anger. I didn’t mean it.”

“Please forgive me this once. I really feel terrible and guilty about what happened to your mother.”

After saying that, she started knocking her forehead against the floor.

The sounds were loud.

After only a few times, red marks appeared.

Her eyes kept flicking toward Caleb.

But Caleb didn’t feel sorry for her.

Without a trace of pity, he dragged her up and shut her outside the door.

It took Caleb a long time to turn around.

He didn’t dare face me.

“I’m sorry, Elena. I didn’t know. I shouldn’t have doubted you. You’re not the kind of person who would do that.”

“You don’t lie. You wouldn’t deceive me. What happened with the driver was real too, wasn’t it?”

The more he thought about it, the guiltier he became.

He raised his hand and slapped himself.

“I’m a bastard. How could I be such a bastard? How could I not believe you? How could I not go to you?”

I gave a mocking smile.

Then I ordered him to leave too.

“I want to rest.”
