My daughter let out a happy scream and ran straight into the 

man’s arms. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. 

“I thought you weren’t coming back for three more days.” 

Michael Thompson held Lily in one arm and wrapped the other 

around my waist. 

“Lily told me some man was trying to be her new father. I cut 

my trip short and flew home.” 

Lily blinked at me from his arms. She had the same 

mischievous look as her dad. 

Michael’s eyes went cold. “Trying to take my wife and be my 

daughter’s father. That’s quite a plan, Mr. Bennett.” 

Christopher was caught completely off guard. He tried to 

recover. “You leave Emma alone with a kid and not even a 

nanny? You’re not much of a catch.” 

“None of your business.” 

Christopher’s face crumpled as he looked at me, as if he hadn’t 

expected such open hostility from me. 

“What are you so upset about? You wronged me back then, 

and now you’re showing up and harassing me. What kind of 

face do you expect from me?” 

“I don’t need you to tell me who’s worth loving. Aside from 

misjudging you five years ago, my judgment has always been 

sound.” 

“Did you ever respect me, Christopher?” 

“That’s not how it was… Emma.” 

He trailed off before he could finish. 

Christopher stood frozen in place, but his eyes never left our 

backs as we walked away.
