He Left Me in a Fire for Her, Now He’s Looking for Me at His Engagement Party Chapter 02

He Left Me in a Fire for Her, Now He’s Looking for Me at His Engagement Party Chapter 02

After that day, I started giving Christopher the cold shoulder. But I still opened our chat every day to read his messages.

I knew it wasn’t healthy, growing up alone with just my mom had left me insecure and desperate for reassurance.

Someone like me needs someone who won’t leave. And Christopher used to be exactly that.

I knew his feelings for Victoria wasn’t really love. But I wanted to hear him deny it himself.

It dawned on me slowly. I couldn’t stand the thought of him giving anyone else his attention anymore.

But this time, Christopher didn’t chase after me. He just left me with “You need to think about your behavior” and went silent.

I later found out he had gone to a hot spring resort in another state with Victoria, supposedly for the healing effects of the mineral springs.

The roles were reversed. I became the one chasing, the one overthinking. Under his judgment, I began to wonder if my background itself was a flaw I could never escape.

Then the hospital called, my mother’s condition had suddenly worsened and she needed surgery that night.

My mind went blank. I ran to the hospital. But that surgical bill may as well have been a mortgage.

My first thought was Christopher, so I called him several times, but there was no answer.

I barely remember how I scraped that money together. I only remember my hands shaking as I made call after call until I finally paid the bill, and my legs gave out.

A nurse suggested gently that I change my clothes. That’s when I realized my whole back was soaked through.

I saw Christopher again two weeks later. I was bartending at a club when I was assigned to his private lounge.

One of his rich friends whistled at me. “Hey, isn’t that Christopher’s girlfriend? What are you doing selling drinks here? Short on cash, or looking to land a bigger fish?”

They all laughed. I ignored it, set down my tray, and turned to leave.

Christopher lunged across the room, punched the guy, then grabbed my hand and pulled me into the hallway.

“What, you need money that bad? Working a place like this?”

I pried his fingers off mine one by one. “Did you get any of my calls?”

He frowned slightly. “You mean those calls earlier? Victoria and I were on a plane at the time.”

“And after that?”

He looked guilty. Dropped his gaze. “That was so long ago. What’s the point of bringing it up now?”

Right. No point at all.

I didn’t even have time to catch my breath before the next storm hit.

I was on my electric scooter after my shift.

At the next intersection, a car came straight at me without a turn signal.

I was still conscious when I hit the ground. I crawled toward my phone. Victoria kicked it away.

I thought of my mother in her hospital bed. I begged her to call an ambulance. I didn’t want to die. I couldn’t die.

After what felt like forever, Christopher rushed over and walked right past me, lifting a tearful Victoria into his arms.

“I already called 911 for you, Emma. Just hold on a little longer.”

He didn’t look back at me. I heard him murmuring to her as he walked away. “It’s okay. I’ll handle this.”

Their figures blurred together.

I lay on the asphalt and felt my blood turning cold.
