He Kissed His First Love in Front of My BLIND Eyes-Until I Watched Him Burn Chapter 08

I didn’t answer.

“He’s been sitting in the ruins for two days now.”

I went anyway.

Not because I was soft. Not because I needed closure.

I just wanted to see with my own eyes what the end looked like.

When I got there, it was snowing-light snow.

The ruins were white.

Cameron sat in the middle of it all, his back like a lonely grave.

His hair was half gray. He wore a thin shirt, stained with mud. He’d wasted away to nothing.

In his hand, he clutched that burned rope end like it was the whole world.

He heard my footsteps. Slowly, he looked up.

When he saw me, a flicker of light came into his clouded eyes.

He tried to stand. No strength left.

He reached for me, lips moving, breath barely there.

“…Sloane…”

I walked up to him and stopped.

White cashmere coat. Perfect makeup. I was everything he wasn’t.

“You came…” He smiled-more painful than a cry. “I knew you’d come…”

I said nothing. Just looked down at him, cold.

“I’m sorry…” Tears and snowmelt ran down the lines of his face. “Sloane, I’m so sorry…”

“I was wrong. I know I was wrong…”

“Forgive me. Please. Take my eyes… no, give me yours… just take mine… just please forgive me…”

He babbled, trying to crawl toward me, to touch my clothes.

I stepped back. Out of reach.

“Cameron,” I said, my voice empty of warmth. “Don’t you think it’s a little late for this?”

“I don’t want your eyes. I have my own.”

“And I don’t want your apology. Because I never… not once… thought about forgiving you.”

My words went through him like a blade.

He stared at me. The light in his eyes faded, grain by grain.

“You… hate me, don’t you?” His voice was a whisper of wind.

“Hate?” I almost laughed. “Cameron. You give yourself way too much credit.”

“I don’t hate you. I just think you’re disgusting.”

I looked him right in the eye and said, clear and slow, “I came today to tell you one thing.”

“I’m pregnant.”

His pupils blew wide.

“It’s Landon’s.” I put my hand on my flat stomach and smiled, a warm, mother’s smile. “We’re getting

married next month.”

“I’m going to be Landon’s real wife. The new Mrs. Hawthorne. And you, Cameron? You’re nothing.”

“You’re a loser. Not even worth remembering.”

Blood burst from Cameron’s mouth and splashed across the white snow.

He stared at me with huge eyes, like he was trying to carve my face into his soul.

Then his body went limp. He fell backward.

His hand still stretched toward me.

The guide rope slipped from his fingers and landed in the snow.

I looked down at it for one second. Then I turned and walked away without looking back.

The snow fell harder. Soon it covered his body and the rope.

Every sin. Every bit of hate. Buried under white.
