Mrs. Romano knocked on the door, her voice choked with tears.

But Dante only shouted louder from inside.

“Mom, she’s ruined me! How am I supposed to face anyone looking like this?”

“I’m going to kill her! I’m going to kill her!”

Isabel’s screams grew sharper.

“Someone, save me!”

Then came a loud crash.

Her voice cut off.

Fearing a murder was about to take place, Mr. Romano paced anxiously outside the door.

“Son, don’t be afraid. The Romano family has doctors, we have money. As long as you’re okay, Dad will find a way to save you.”

Soon, the sound of Dante’s sobbing came from inside.

“Dad, can I still be fixed? I’m so scared.”

“You can. Of course you can. Your uncle is fine. We’ll beg Miss Meredith to save you.”

I immediately held up a hand.

“I haven’t agreed to anything. I’m going back to bed with my husband.”

With that, I pulled Marco back into our room.

That night, no matter who knocked, I didn’t answer.

Early the next morning, I opened the door to find Mr. and Mrs. Romano sitting on the floor outside.

They hadn’t slept all night. Their eyes were bruised with exhaustion.

When Mrs. Romano saw me, she immediately scrambled to her feet and seized my hand.

“Miss Meredith, please, save my son. He’s our only child. If he’s ruined, we can’t go on living.”

I had always believed her love for Dante was genuine.

So I didn’t shake her off.

“How is Dante now?”

Mr. Romano answered quickly.

“We sent him home last night. The private doctor gave him a sedative. He’s probably still asleep.”

“Then I’ll go back with you and take a look.”

I hadn’t gotten a clear view of what he’d become last night. I certainly wasn’t going to miss it now.

“Husband, come with me.”

Marco smiled and tightened his hold on my hand.
