He Guaranteed Her Loan, I Filed for Divorce the Same Day Chapter 14

The next day, I arranged for someone to drop off a box full of books and a brand-new school uniform for Kai. I did not show up myself.

When the delivery person handed the items over at the school gate, Kai ran after them and pressed a crumpled handwritten note into their hands.

Messy, uneven handwriting read: [Mom, can I come visit your apartment?]

The delivery worker sent me a photo of the note.

I stared at it for a long time, and sent no reply.

Liana informed me Darien had reached out for legal advice. He wanted to use my higher

income to argue for increased child-support payments.

I petitioned the court for fixed, statutorily-set child-support amounts.

Liana submitted all supporting evidence: my pay stubs, the video of Darien signing the guaranty, divorce paperwork, and our debt-severance ruling.

When Darien received the court summons, he stormed straight to my workplace that

afternoon.

He stood in front of the reception counter and shouted loud enough for everyone to hear.

“Elowen! How can you be this ruthless! You know exactly how much I make compared to you! Don’t you?”

I walked out to the lobby and faced him.

He had wasted away. His cheekbones jutted sharply. Heavy dark circles sat beneath his His ride-share driver vest was worn and wrinkled.

“If you cannot afford to raise him, file for a custody modification.”

He glared at me, eyes bloodshot, like he wanted to tear me apart.

“I would rather die than hand our son over to you.”

“Then raise him properly.”

I turned and walked back inside.

He screamed insults out in the lobby for a long time before security removed him.

That evening, Liana messaged me.

“The judge ruled in our favor. Child-support payments are fixed at

one-thousand-five-hundred dollars monthly, aligned with standard local living costs.”

I sent back one word.

“Good.”

Minutes later another message arrived.

“Darien received the court order. He’s also asking attorneys whether he can apply for a one-time lump-sum education fund from you.”

I stared at my screen and typed my reply.

“Let him file that motion. I will pay whatever amount the court orders. Not a single dollar

more.”

Liana replied: [Understood.]

That same night, Kai called me from a payphone. Background noise was loud, like he was standing out on a busy street.

“Mom. I got an A on my assignment today.”

I said, “Good job. Keep it up.”

He went quiet for a moment. His voice turned small.

“Mom, can I come over to your place? I’m not scared of roaches anymore. I promise I won’t run off,”

I held my phone and did not answer.

He waited a few seconds, then whispered.

“Mom… are you getting rid of me?”

I closed my eyes

“I pay your child-support every month.”

From the other end of the line, I heard him sniffle.

“That’s not the same thing.”
