He Guaranteed Her Loan, I Filed for Divorce the Same Day Chapter 12

He spoke fast, scared I would walk away mid-sentence.

“The lenders have already reported it to the police, but the police say that since this involves illegal lending practices, the lender is under investigation. The debt still has to be repaid, but they can’t use violent collection methods anymore.”

I looked straight at him.

“So what’s your repayment plan?”

His mouth opened. No words came out.

Kai ran out from his hospital room. His hospital gown hung loose on his body. His feet were

bare.

“Mom!” he cried. Big tears splattered down his cheeks.

“Take me with you. I don’t want to stay with Dad anymore.”

I watched him, but did not respond.

Darien snapped his head upward, clinging to this last lifeline.

“Kai stays with me. You are not taking him.”

He was convinced I would cave and reconcile with him for our son’s sake.

Ignoring him, I addressed Kai directly.

“Your dad and I are divorced. Where you live is not a choice you get to make just because you

are crying today.”

Kai sobbed so hard his face turned purple.

“I know I messed up. Aunt Lorelei tricked me. She threw my backpack away. She barely fed

me…’

Darien knelt down to pull him into an embrace.

Kai pushed him away and threw himself toward me. His small hands clamped tight to the hem

of my blouse.

“Mom, take me home. I won’t yell at you anymore. I’ll be good.”

I looked down at him. Every nerve inside me was pulled taut.

In my past life, he had mailed me that Ivy League withdrawal notice on my birthday, vowing to punish me for the rest of his life.

In this life, he clung to my clothes, crying like a child abandoned by the whole world.

Still, I did not bend down.

I pried his fingers loose one by one.

“Kai, when you stood up for Lorelei back then, did you ever think about this day?”

He cried harder, gasping for air.

“I’m sorry! I’m really sorry!”

Darien stood behind us, voice trembling.

“Elowen, can’t you find it in your heart to have mercy, just this once? Look at how broken he

is.”

I stood up and would not glance at him.

“I will not fight for physical custody. He is your son. You raise him.”

Darien was stunned.

He had expected me to fight for Kai. He had even prepared for a long custody battle.

He’d always believed our boy was my greatest weakness.

But I was letting go.

“Elowen!” he shouted behind me, disbelief thick in his tone.

“You’re his mother! How can you walk away from him!”

I left.

The hospital-room door closed behind me. Kai’s sharp, desperate sobs seeped out through the

track

“Mom! Mom please don’t leave me!”

A nurse hurried over and quietly asked whether I needed to call a doctor for the upset child.

I shook my head.

“His father is here.”

The elevator doors opened. I stepped inside.

My phone started buzzing. Kai was calling.

I did not answer.

Ring after ring. Seventeen missed calls piled up on my screen.

All from Kai.

He had never called me so many times before in his life.
