Darien stared hard at me.

“You really are going to weaponize divorce against me, aren’t you?”

“Yes,” I answered without hesitation.

He let out a cold laugh.

“You’re really willing to walk away? What about our son? Are you abandoning him?”

“Kai stays with you.”

Those words knocked Darien completely still.

He knew how deeply I loved our boy.

He remembered all the sleepless nights I’d spent for Kai’s health concern, every medical center I’d dragged him across the state to visit. No one knew that better than Darien.

Kai screamed at the top of his lungs.

“Fine then, get divorced! Dad, you don’t need her anymore, and neither do I! Kick her to get out of this house!”

He glared at me as if I were his worst enemy.

Something squeezed tight around my heart. My face paled, just for a split second.

That tiny reaction was all Kai needed. A victorious little smile tugged at his mouth.

Darien avoided my gaze.

“Elowen, you’re not thinking clearly right now. We’ll talk once you’ve calmed down.”

He took Kai’s hand and walked out the front door.

I backed up all my video recordings and uploaded copies to cloud storage. Then I dialed my attorney again.

“Freeze every asset under my name immediately.”

I stayed up late going through every single one of our holdings.

The next morning, I met with Liana to hash out divorce terms and property division.

Darien’s name popped up on my phone screen. I accepted the call, and boiling rage poured through the line.

“Why can’t I withdraw funds from our holdings?”

My tone stayed frigid.

“You’re not touching marital assets to fill in her deep black hole. Not a chance.”

“Divorce first. Once property is split, you can blow through your portion however you want.”

Silence hung for a beat on the other end. Then Darien’s voice dropped to ice-cold fury.

“Divorce, divorce. Is that all you know how to threaten me with?”

“Elowen, there’s a limit to this tantrum-throwing. If you keep pushing me, you won’t like what happens next.”
