“Elena… look at me. Don’t I look like a complete idiot?”

“I thought she saved my life, so I gave her everything, did everything for her. And in the end…”

“I’m sorry, Elena… for a liar, I hurt you for four years…”

Through tear-blurred eyes, he thought he saw me stir slightly.

He held his breath immediately and stared hard.

But it was only a wish.

I didn’t move. I just lay there-quiet in a way that made his heart race with panic.

Before the tears fell again, he made up his mind.

Cecilia would pay a heavy price.

He walked out of the room and went first to Cecilia’s specimen room.

Inside were pieces of me. He would take them all, preserve them with care.

He pushed open the door. The room was silent, stainless steel shelves gleaming under cold light.

Row after row of glass jars lined the racks, labels facing out, dates clearly marked.

He read each one.

Left kidney, pancreas, lower lobe of right lung, partial small intestine, eyeballs…

Four full years. A hundred surgeries.

Every single one from the same person.

He wiped his eyes dry, and when his vision cleared, he noticed something wrong.

Normally, organs preserved in specialized fluid stay intact for years-even decades.

But these tissues, once whole, were now tinged with a rotting gray-brown at their edges.

Even the most recently removed brain-its cortical folds were smudging like dissolving clay. The usual gray-white had turned a dark, decayed brown.

He reached out and touched the cold glass wall.

Condensation droplets rolled down its surface, leaving streaking trails like tears.

Suddenly he remembered-my body had been that same temperature.

Without warning, he broke down sobbing.

“Elena, you must have hated me so much… to not even leave one piece for me…”

He dropped to his knees, buried his face in his palms, and his shoulders shook violently.

His phone buzzed repeatedly-messages from Cecilia. He didn’t even glance at them.

When he finally ran out of tears, he stood up slowly.

When he walked out that door, his face was blank-nothing left but a bone-chilling coldness.

He unlocked his phone and scanned Cecilia’s messages.

[Nate, three days are up. Why aren’t you here yet?]

[It’s so empty here. I’m all alone. Will you come get me?]

[Why isn’t there any food on this island? I ate everything I brought. I’ve missed two meals now. When will you get here?]

[My phone’s almost dead. Please, just text me back-I’m begging you.]

[I don’t know why, but my lower abdomen is killing me. Am I dying? Am I going to die on this island?]

At the last one, a cold glint passed through his eyes.

Lower abdomen-the location of the transplanted kidney.

He glanced back at the specimen room door, and his lips curved upward.

“It looks like Elena’s kidney inside Cecilia is starting to rot too. That’s karma.”

He really wanted to leave her there to die alone.

But death was too easy for her.

“Cecilia Vance, what you owe Elena-I’m going to make you pay back with your whole life.”

He replied: [I’m coming to get you.]

When the helicopter landed, Cecilia was still frowning.

“Nate, you said you were taking me to some event?”

She clutched her lower abdomen, face pale. “Can we please not go? I need to see a doctor.”

“No.” His voice was cold and hard, his expression stripped of its usual warmth.

Cecilia’s heart seized with unease. She tried to stop walking, but he clamped down on her wrist and dragged her forward.

She looked up and saw white funeral banners, and panic took over.

“Where is this? I’m not going…”

She refused to take another step.
