Strictly speaking, it wasn’t that all the furniture was gone. Everything that belonged to me was.

The moment Sophie walked in, she frowned.

“Why does it smell like cleaning products in here?”

Grant stood in the entryway as if he hadn’t heard her.

The next second, he started searching room after room.

“Elena?”

“Elena!”

“Where are you?”

There was no answer.

My half of the closet was empty.

My skincare products and towels were gone from the bathroom.

Every book I had bought was missing from the shelves.

Even the photo of the two of us on the nightstand had disappeared.

Grant pulled out his phone and called me.

Once.

Twice.

More than a dozen times.

The number had been disconnected.

He immediately called his executive assistant.

“Find out where Elena went today. Check any public travel records the company can access, transportation records, anyone we can contact. Now.”

Sophie sat on the sofa, clearly impatient.

“So she moved out. That’s all?”

“She knows we got married. Of course she wants to make sure you see how angry she is.”

“Once she realizes you’re not going after her, she’ll come back on her own.”

Then she noticed the frame on the coffee table.

“Isn’t this that Al certificate you made back then?”

She picked it up and laughed.

“I’m the one who helped you make the template.”

“The face swap wasn’t even done properly, and she still accepted it.”

“How could she possibly cut you off for real?”

Grant didn’t laugh.

A little over ten minutes later, his assistant called back.

“Grant, there’s only one thing I can confirm.”

“Elena left from O’Hare about two hours ago.”

“The ticket was booked through her company’s corporate travel account.”

“The project permissions are marked confidential, so I can’t find the final office location or get her new

contact information.”

Grant tightened his grip on the phone.

“A company project?”

“Wasn’t she terminated today?”

His assistant paused.

“Based on the travel records, it doesn’t look like a normal termination. It looks more like an internal transfer.”

Grant ended the call and immediately called my parents.

He couldn’t reach them.

Then he contacted several friends I used to see regularly.

Not one of them knew where I was.

Sophie leaned against the doorframe.

“Where could she even go? Every other time she said she was leaving, didn’t she come back a few days

later?”

Grant still ignored her.

He walked into the bedroom.

The only thing left on the bed was a clean set of spare sheets.

My usual shampoo.

The light-colored towel I always used in the bathroom.

The photo beside the bed.

The coffee beans and mugs I had bought for the kitchen.

Every single one was gone.

I hadn’t moved out to make him chase after me.

I had moved out for good.

Sophie walked over holding the Al certificate.

“Seriously, you barely put any effort into this thing back then. I can’t believe she never blew up at you over it.”

Grant suddenly turned around.

“Why was she at the wedding?”

Sophie didn’t answer right away.

“What?”

“The housekeeper has been sending me updates on her schedule.”

“There hasn’t been a single problem in years.”

“So why, of all times, did she know the wedding address this time?”

Grant grabbed Sophie by the wrist.

“Did you tell her?”

Sophie immediately pulled free.

“Let go. You’re hurting me.”

“Why would I bring her there on the last day?”

“Besides, she’s my friend. Why would I deliberately make her see all that?”

Grant stared at her.

What she had just said didn’t match anything she had done.

“You married the man she was dating, and now you’re telling me you’d never hurt her on purpose?”

With that, he grabbed his car keys and headed for the door.

Sophie hurried after him.

“Where are you going?”

“The airport.”

“Grant, tonight is our wedding night.”

He didn’t stop.

“The wedding and the wedding night were just formalities.”

“Elena is the one I truly can’t afford to lose.”
