He Gave Her a Three-Day Honeymoon, Yet Called One Day With Me a Waste of Time Chapter 02

Grant’s friends were still joking around. “What are you all worried about? We’ve known how Grant feels about Sophie for years.”

“Last time Elena had a fever over 103, Sophie said she’d twisted her ankle, and Grant walked straight out of urgent care, remember?”

“This time it’s even more obvious. Sophie can’t carry a pregnancy herself, and Grant immediately started booking clinic appointments for Elena.”

Someone turned to him.

“Seriously, have you and Elena ever even slept together?”

Grant let out a laugh.

“No.”

He even raised one hand as if he were taking an oath in court.

“I’ve never touched her. Sophie is the only woman I’ve ever wanted.”

Sophie laughed and gave him a playful shove.

“Oh, please. If it weren’t for Elena, the two of us never would’ve met.”

I gripped the hem of my coat to stop myself from storming out.

Before Sophie linked her arm through Grant’s and walked away, he glanced in my direction.

His gaze lingered for only two seconds.

He probably thought my figure looked familiar, but he quickly looked away.

As far as he knew, I was supposed to be sitting obediently in the fertility clinic waiting room right now.

A guest nearby sighed in admiration.

“This wedding is gorgeous. I heard Grant spent ages planning it himself?”

No.

I had planned the entire wedding.

I had planned the entire wedding myself—the flowers, the seating chart, the entrance display, and even the little decorations beside the dessert table that I had made by hand at home.

But now, the names on the welcome sign had been changed to Grant Mercer and Sophie Lane.

Every photo had been replaced with pictures of them.

I listened as the people beside me kept talking about how much Grant loved Sophie.

Whenever Sophie wasn’t feeling well, he would cancel work to stay with her.

If she wanted to see a movie he had absolutely no interest in, he would buy the tickets.

If she liked a coffee shop that always had a long line, he was willing to stand there with her for an hour.

The most ironic part was that just last week, he had told me going to the county clerk’s office to handle the paperwork was a waste of time.

That same week, he had spent three hours with Sophie at the county courthouse and clerk’s office, completing their civil ceremony and marriage registration.

So it wasn’t that he hated waiting in line.

He simply thought I wasn’t worth the time.

I raised my head.

Not far away, my parents were talking to Sophie.

My mother was even adjusting Sophie’s veil for her, smiling the entire time.

She had never looked at me that way when I tried on my wedding dress.

A wave of nausea hit me.

I hurried into the restroom.

I had barely recovered inside one of the stalls when I heard Sophie walk in with two of her friends to touch up their makeup.

I stayed where I was.

One of her friends asked, “Elena’s biological parents are both here. Aren’t you worried she’ll find out? She’s always considered you her best friend.”

Sophie reapplied her lipstick in front of the mirror.

“Just because she thinks of me as a friend doesn’t mean I feel the same way. If it weren’t for Grant, I never would’ve spent all these years pretending to be her best friend.”

She paused, then laughed.

“My aunt did help a lot, though. Ever since she started working at Elena’s house as the housekeeper, Grant has basically known what Elena was doing at all times.”

I closed my eyes.

So even the housekeeper had been Sophie’s person all along.

The restroom door opened again.

This time, it was my mother, Diane.

“Sophie, why are you still in here? The ceremony is about to start. Grant has already asked me twice where you are.”

Sophie turned and hugged her with a smile.

“Thank you, Diane. If you hadn’t been speaking up for us all these years, Grant and I might never have made it this far.”

My mother patted her shoulder.

“I’ve always thought of you as family.”

She paused.

“To be honest, you and Grant are a better match. Elena needs too much attention, and Grant can’t give her that. The two of you have lifestyles that fit each other much better.”

Behind the stall door, I clenched my hands so tightly that my nails dug into my palms.

Only after the restroom fell silent again did I finally push the door open.

I had just reached the sink when the door opened once more.

My mother and I came face-to-face.
