He Gave Her a Three-Day Honeymoon, Yet Called One Day With Me a Waste of Time Chapter 03

The moment my mother saw me, she stopped short and frowned. “What are you doing here?”

I didn’t answer.

She stared at me for two seconds, then lowered her voice.

“If you came here to stop the wedding in front of everyone, leave now.”

I looked at her.

“You know he’s my boyfriend.”

“I know.”

She answered without hesitation.

“Sophie has no parents. We watched her grow up. She finally has the family she’s always wanted, and I’m not going to let anyone ruin that for her today.”

I could barely believe what I was hearing.

“So she marries my boyfriend behind my back, and somehow I’m the problem?”

My mother frowned.

“You and Grant were never legally married. That AI certificate means nothing.”

“He chose Sophie in the end. I understand that you don’t like the outcome, but this is a decision between adults.”

“Don’t make a scene here today. Just leave.”

My boyfriend had married someone else behind my back.

The woman I had always considered my best friend had been using me from the beginning.

Even my own parents had known in advance and chosen their side.

I wanted to ask why they had all kept it from me.

I wanted to ask why everyone seemed to think I was the one who should simply accept all of this.

In the end, I could only force out one sentence.

“Mom, I’m your daughter.”

She looked at me, her tone still hard.

“We’ll talk about this another time. Not today.”

She reached for my arm and tried to lead me toward the exit.

I shook her off.

Before I could say anything else, Grant walked over.

He clearly hadn’t expected it to actually be me.

“Elena.”

For the first time, panic crossed his face.

He reached out and grabbed my hand.

“Listen to me. Go home for now. I’ll explain everything tonight.”

I couldn’t pull my hand free, so I could only stare at him.

“Explain what?”

Grant lowered his voice.

“I handled this badly. Sophie grew up without a complete family. She’s always wanted to experience a real wedding. I know how close you two are, and I was afraid that if I told you beforehand, you’d make it into something more complicated than it is.”

I stared at him.

He continued, “This reception is just a formality to me.”

“If you want one, I can give you a wedding later too. The place is full of guests and clients right now, so go home first. You can make up the fertility clinic appointment tomorrow, and we’ll talk later.”

I yanked my hand free.

“You were afraid I’d misunderstand?”

I let out a laugh.

“I spent a year planning our wedding, and you said wasting twenty-four hours on it was too much. But for Sophie’s wedding, you can put off an important client, rearrange six months of meetings, and even make time for a honeymoon.”

“You call that a formality?”

Grant didn’t answer immediately.

His gaze shifted away for a moment.

I caught that familiar flash of impatience in his eyes.

But he quickly forced it down.

“Elena, I never planned on losing you. I’ll come home tonight, and we’ll talk through everything.”

My mother cut in from beside us.

“That’s enough. This is not the place to deal with your private issues.”

Several of Grant’s friends gathered around us as well.

They clearly thought I still didn’t know about the civil ceremony.

“Elena, don’t bring all of this up in front of the guests today.”

“Sophie just wanted this wedding. We’re only here to support her.”

“Whatever is going on between you and Grant, the two of you can talk about it at home. Don’t deal with it here.”

Just then, Sophie walked over.

The moment she saw me, she blinked several times, and her voice immediately turned tearful.

“This is all my fault. If you really can’t accept this wedding, I’ll leave right now.”

With that, she turned and ran toward the exit.

Grant barely hesitated before immediately chasing after her.

I watched him disappear and no longer wanted to explain anything.

I didn’t want to ask any more questions either.

My mother drove me back to the apartment.

She tried to speak several times along the way, but I didn’t respond.

Once I got home, I started packing.

My clothes.

My computer.

My documents.

My books.

My photos.

Everything that belonged to me.

As I packed, I kept retching.

Outside the windows, the sky slowly darkened.

Standing in the nearly empty living room, I admitted something to myself clearly for the first time.

This was not my home.

Grant was not the man I wanted.

And as for the parents who had known everything and still chosen Sophie’s side—

I decided I would no longer be the one trying to maintain a relationship with them.
