He Divorced Me Six Years Ago Without Me Knowing Chapter 03

“How is that possible?”

Sophia staggered back several steps.

When had she divorced Julian? She had never signed a divorce agreement.

After standing frozen for a moment, Sophia no longer cared that she was covered in filth. She turned and ran straight toward Julian’s office.

The office door was half open.

Just as she was about to push it open, she heard the voice of Julian’s friend and colleague coming from inside. “Julian, you even posted the divorce decree. Aren’t you afraid Sophia will leave you?”

Julian was silent for a moment before replying, “She won’t.”

Sophia saw a faint smile curve his lips. “Sophia doesn’t have a job now, and she still has her grandmother to support. If she leaves me, what can she do?”

“So what are you planning? Are you really going to make Sophia your mistress?”

His friend continued, “Back when you first turned down the appointment as Chief Judge of the Riverton County Superior Court, you had Sophia sign that conflict-of-interest acknowledgment form, and you secretly slipped the divorce agreement in with it. She thought you had turned down the appointment for her and was moved beyond words. But in reality, Claire was pregnant, and you wanted more time to take care of her.”

“Later, you set Claire and her son up in a suburban house less than two miles from the courthouse where you worked. For their sake, you kept turning down appointment after appointment. It wasn’t until the child was old enough to start elementary school and needed to attend a downtown school that you finally accepted the appointment.”

“Sophia has no idea that you had planned to talk her into resigning this time. Before you even had to say a word, she quit for your sake on her own. She has been completely devoted to you. Can you really bear to do this to her?”

After hearing all of that, Sophia could barely stay on her feet.

It turned out that back when she thought Julian had turned down his first transfer for her, back when she thought she was at her happiest, he had tricked her into signing a divorce agreement.

It turned out that Julian’s five rejected transfers over eight years had never been for her. They had been for Claire and the child.

It felt as if her heart had been torn open by force. The pain made Sophia bend over.

The divorce agreement in her hand had been crumpled beyond recognition.

How ridiculous. She had actually planned to ask Julian for a divorce.

In the end, they had already been divorced for six years.

“As for Sophia, I’ll find a way to make her accept being kept as the other woman.”

Julian spoke again, his tone light and unconcerned. “That’s not much different from keeping our relationship off the record, is it?”

At those words, Sophia could no longer hold herself back. She shoved the door open.

“Julian, how can you be this shameless?”

She stared at him, every word soaked in pain. “What exactly am I to you? What were those six years of lies supposed to mean? What was the career I gave up for you supposed to mean?”

Sophia’s eyes were red.

Julian was caught off guard when he saw her standing there in such a miserable state, but his brows quickly tightened. “You… how did you end up looking like this? Go home and clean yourself up.”

Sophia understood the disgust on his face.

Julian thought she was embarrassing.

How laughable.

She had exposed Julian’s scheme against her, yet his first reaction was to despise her.

Sophia dug her nails into her palm and stared at him, enunciating every word. “Julian, don’t you owe me an explanation?”

Julian wearily pinched the bridge of his nose. By the time he looked at her again, he had already regained his calm.

“Sophia, if you hadn’t insisted on posting that clarification, things wouldn’t have gotten this far. From now on, you’ll have to stay in the shadows.”

He took out a black AmEx card and held it out to Sophia. Then he said, “Your previous job was too exhausting anyway. Take this chance to get some proper rest.”

“Don’t worry. Claire and her son are my responsibility, but so are you and your grandmother. I will never abandon any of you.”

Sophia stared at the black card in front of her and found the whole thing utterly absurd.

What made Julian think a single black AmEx card could make up for six years of deception?

“I don’t need it.”

Sophia tightened her grip on the divorce agreement in her hand. She took several deep breaths before barely steadying her voice. “Julian…”

Before she could finish, her phone suddenly began ringing urgently.

It was the care facility where her grandmother lived.

A caregiver had recognized Sophia and told her grandmother what was happening online. Her grandmother had been overwhelmed by anger and shock, then fainted.

Sophia hurriedly hung up the phone and rushed to the care facility.

When she arrived, her grandmother had already regained consciousness. But the moment she saw Sophia, she reached out with a trembling hand. “Sophia, everything online is fake, right?”

Tears welled in the old woman’s cloudy eyes. “You and Julian were so in love. How could you possibly be divorced?”

“And now they’re spreading rumors that you’re Julian’s mistress. They’re absolutely shameless.”

She clutched Sophia’s hand tightly, her voice full of aching concern. “Don’t be afraid. I called Julian for you. He’ll be here soon.”

The moment she finished speaking, the door to the room opened.

Sophia turned and saw Julian walk in.

But Claire was following right behind him.
