He Deleted My Number After 972 Messages of Love Chapter 28

As for Jesse, his grades had tanked. He’d even turned in a blank exam on our last test.

I was sitting in the faculty office when the teacher finished a long lecture with Jesse.

She picked up her water bottle and said, “Think about what you’re doing with yourself.” Then she stepped out to refill it.

Jesse didn’t look embarrassed at all. “You’re with Ezra now, aren’t you?”

I immediately went on guard. “Are you planning to tell on us?”

He gave a bitter half-smile. “Sadie, just how much of a mess do you think I’ve become to you?”

Once I was sure he wasn’t going to turn us in, I kept my head down and kept grading, ignoring his question.

He kept talking anyway, more to himself than to me. “If I’d finished sending all nine hundred ninety-nine messages saying I had a crush on you back then, do you think things would’ve turned out differently between us?”

I hated that kind of pointless regret more than anything. I pulled him back to reality, flat and unemotional. “You didn’t turn in your vocab quiz. I already put you down as missing.”

Jesse’s mouth twisted in self-deprecation, and he walked out.

After that, he stopped bothering me entirely. His grades kept falling—completely off a cliff. Everyone assumed it was because of heartbreak. I didn’t feel bad for him at all.

He was just using it as an excuse to fall apart. I’d gone through my own breakup and never missed a single assignment.

I’d come home and cry until midnight, then drag myself back up to study with swollen eyes. He had no one to blame but himself.
