He Deleted My Number After 972 Messages of Love Chapter 20

I’d seen a certain style of homemade cookies trending all over social media lately. With nothing else to do on Sunday, I messed around and tried baking a batch.

Monday morning, I brought them to school to hand out to the few people I considered close friends—Ezra included.

He usually showed up late, so I set the cookie tin on his desk for him. When he walked into the classroom that morning, he looked worn out and sullen, colder than usual. Without even glancing at the container, he tossed it over to Luke.

I sighed. “Don’t you like cookies?”

He blinked slowly and muttered a quiet “Mm.”

“Alright, I’ll bring you something different next time.”

That finally got a reaction out of him. “Wait, you baked these entirely from scratch yourself?”

I nodded.

Ezra turned and called across the room. “Luke, hand that tin back over here right now.”

Luke gave him a look. “…”

Seriously, man?

He reluctantly handed the tin back. Ezra hadn’t sat down yet and was staring at the one cookie Luke had already pulled out.

“Come on, I already touched this one—can’t you just let me have it?”

Embarrassed by Ezra’s dramatics, I tugged him back toward his seat. “I thought you didn’t want these…”

“Did I?” He sank into his chair. “Didn’t even look at what was in there.”

I watched him take a bite. “Are they good?”

He nodded.

“Why’d you give me these, then?”

“I was bored on Sunday and decided to try a new recipe. I baked extra portions to hand out to all my good friends around class.”

At that last line, his lip tugged down into a subtle, dejected little frown.
