He Deleted My Number After 972 Messages of Love Chapter 19

It was Saturday night, and Ezra showed up to the bar pretty late. Everyone gave him crap for it.

Out of everyone there, Ezra and Jesse were fairly close. That night, though, Jesse kept his head down drinking in silence, and not a single word passed between them—the air hung uncomfortably awkward and charged.

By the late stretch of the night, some people had passed out in the booths while others had hit the dance floor. Only Ezra and Jesse remained at the table.

Jesse set his glass down. “How’s your dynamic with my ex these days?”

Ezra glanced up at him slowly.

Jesse let out a faint smile. “Your seatmate, I mean. We called it quits three months back.”

He spilled the entire backstory of what had happened between them.

“I was so stupid back then. I didn’t see she was the girl I’d always wanted. I hurt her, and now she barely talks to me. I’m trying to win her back. Since we’re friends, and you’re close with her, could you help me smooth things over with her?”

Confetti rained down from above as the DJ shouted into the mic, the crowd on the dance floor roaring back. The venue was buzzing at full blast. Their corner, though, was eerily quiet—an uncomfortable, tense silence hanging between them.

Ever since Jesse started talking, Ezra had been leaning lazily against the booth, giving no reaction at all. After a long moment, he drained his glass in one gulp and finally responded.

“I can’t do that for you.”

“As it happens, I’ve got feelings for her as well.”

Jesse didn’t look surprised at all.

“Didn’t peg you as the type to fall for someone.”

“But if you’re gonna waste your time, maybe focus on your own mess first.”

“Your half-brother’s already got your dad wrapped around his finger.”

“You? Skipping class, slacking off, picking fights with the old man. You’re not getting anything out of this.”

“And Sadie? Don’t bother. She’s not into you.”

The two held each other’s stare from across the table, neither backing down an inch, a self-assured smirk tugging at Jesse’s lips.

“The look in someone’s eyes when they’re in love is unmistakable.”

“I’ve seen that look from her before.”
