He Covered for His Fake Innocent Girl, I Sent Both to Prison Chapter 03

“Or maybe…” My voice cracked, a sob breaking through, “Maybe she was never assaulted at all! Maybe the two of you were sleeping together and—”

Before I could even finish the sentence, a sharp crack echoed through the hallway as his palm slammed violently across my face.

Marcus stood there, his hand still raised, his face twisted in pure rage. “I won’t let you slander her like that! I already told you, Candy and I are having a sham marriage! Do you have to be so utterly malicious, always twisting things?!”

Our explosive shouting match had already drawn a crowd, with neighbors from the upper and lower floors peering over the railings to watch.

One of them called out to Candy and Marcus, “Candy, who is this chick? What is she to your husband?”

Candy stammered, biting her lip, “She’s his… ex…”

Seeing her play the vulnerable, deeply wounded victim, the neighbors immediately put two and two together. They glared at me with pure disgust, and one even stepped forward to shove me back.

“They’re literally getting married! Creeping around another woman’s husband makes you the home-wrecker here! You look like a respectable girl, have some damn shame!”

“Seriously! Get a video of her! Post it online!”

A hysterical laugh escaped my throat. I slammed Marcus’s suitcase down right in front of them. “Marcus Logan, why don’t you tell them? Tell them exactly who the home-wrecker is!”

The suitcase bounced off the floor, but Candy let out a sharp shriek and dropped to the ground, clutching her leg.

Marcus looked down and noticed a tiny, fingernail-sized scratch forming on her shin, and his expression instantly hardened into something feral.

“Valerie Vance! Are you ever going to drop this?! Candy and I have already signed our marriage certificate! Who the hell are you calling a home-wrecker?!”

I stared at him in utter shock, a bitter, hollow smile creeping onto my face. “Marcus Logan, so this is your version of a ‘sham marriage’? You actually legally registered the marriage, and you still have the nerve to call it fake?”

Realizing he had slipped up, Marcus’s eyes flickered with a brief wave of guilt before he immediately deflected in a panic. “You came all the way to her door to assault people over a stupid, worthless piece of jewelry!”

“Valerie, I’m just realizing today how incredibly heartless, selfish, and cold-blooded you really are!”

My eyes widened in disbelief as Marcus stormed back into the apartment in a blind rage.

When he walked back out, he was holding the heirloom brooch I cherished more than life itself, and he hurled it violently onto the floor.

“You want your precious heirloom back so damn bad? Take your garbage and get the hell out!”

“No!” I shrieked, throwing myself forward in a desperate attempt to catch it, but I was too late.

I watched in slow motion as the delicate emeralds and gold shattered against the hard floor, pieces scattering in every direction.

I snapped my head up, my eyes boring into Marcus with absolute, pure hatred.

In ten years, it was the first time he had ever seen anything other than adoration in my eyes. Even in his furious state, a flicker of panic washed over his face.

But in the very next second, Candy began to wail, whimpering softly, “Professor Logan, my leg hurts so bad… do you think it’s broken?”

Marcus snapped out of it instantly. He scooped her up into his arms, completely bypassing me as he bolted toward the stairs.

“Don’t worry, I’m taking you to the hospital right now.”

He moved with such reckless, frantic urgency that his shoulder slammed heavily into me while I was still kneeling on the floor.

I lost my balance and went flying over the edge of the steep apartment staircase, crashing violently down the steps until I hit the landing below.

Amidst the gasps of the neighbors and my own weak, choked cries for help, Marcus didn’t even bother to look back.

Before the darkness finally took me and my eyes shut, the last thing I saw was Candy leaning against Marcus’s shoulder, looking back down at me with a smirk of absolute triumph.

In that final moment of consciousness, the sound of my heart shattering inside my chest was as sharp and clear as the heirloom he had just broken.
