He Chose My Sister. I Went Cold. Chapter 01

The ninety-ninth time I caught Silas Vitale cheating, he slept with my sister—in name only—just to provoke me.

When I pushed open the door, there wasn’t a trace of guilt on his face. He looked as if he hadn’t done a thing wrong.

“Freya, your sister is a lot more interesting in bed than you are.”

In my last life, those words made me lose my mind.

I sent their photos to Page Six.

Silas couldn’t stand the scandal, and he divorced me anyway.

My biological parents took Claire’s side and threw me out.

I thought I would be better off after the divorce.

I wasn’t.

I’d grown up in the Appalachian Mountains, and by the time my biological parents brought me home at eighteen, I had no idea how to survive in New York.

With the full force of the Vitale family against me, I went broke fast. A few years later, I died of cancer.

Claire married Silas and became a fixture in New York society.

As for me, the ex-wife? I was nothing but a punchline.

When I opened my eyes again, I was back on the day I caught them in bed.

…

“Freya, what are you still standing there for? Go in and see who that woman is.”

My mother urged me on, her face a mask of anxiety, as if she were truly on my side.

But it only took a moment to realize this whole scene had been arranged by her and Claire.

In my last life, I’d been skiing in Colorado when my mother called, telling me to come back.

Consumed by fury, I immediately flew back to New York. The moment I walked in, I started a fight.

Silas hit me. I miscarried on the spot.

My mother knew something was wrong, but she didn’t take me to the hospital right away.

I lost my child, my marriage, and what little support I had left.

I closed my eyes, waiting for my breathing to steady. Then I turned and walked out.

This time, I had it figured out.

Love didn’t matter. Money did.

When my mother saw me leave, she froze for a second before gritting her teeth and shoving the bedroom door open herself.

A scream rang out from inside.

Claire Cross frantically yanked the blanket over herself, tears already spilling from her eyes.

“Mom, I… I drank too much. I didn’t mean to…”

My mother feigned a shocked expression, rushing over to point and scold her at the top of her lungs.

Silas wasn’t the least bit panicked.

He slowly pulled on his pants, buckled his belt, and lit a cigarette.

Then he looked at me, his tone pure mockery.

“So how are you planning to make a scene this time?”

The first time, I’d cut the woman’s hair at a charity dinner.

The second time, I’d rammed my car into her assistant’s Porsche.

The third time, I went to his company and screamed outside the boardroom during a meeting. The next day, we were in every gossip column.

There were many more times after that.

All I remembered was shouting myself hoarse, again and again, and the way everyone stared.

They all called me the Vitale family’s crazy wife.

And Silas only pushed me further every time.

This time, I didn’t want him. I just wanted a quiet life.

Just then, Claire slid off the bed and sat on the floor, clutching the blanket as she looked up at me.

“Sis, this is all my fault. Don’t blame Silas. Blame me.”

She looked so pitiful, as if she were shielding Silas from any consequences.

Sure enough, Silas’s expression shifted.

“Freya, this was my—”

“I’m leaving. I have a spa appointment with a friend, and I’m almost late.”

I cut him off.

Then, ignoring the stunned look on Silas’s face, I turned and left.

My mother panicked and chased after me, but I was already driving away.

She stood frozen for a long time, unmoving.

No one had expected me to react like that.
