I went back to the estate after school, bruised and bleeding.

The moment I threw the pen, Kevin had rushed over and shoved me to the ground.

My forehead slammed into the corner of a desk. The whole class watched as blood streamed down my face.

Some of them didn’t react. Others just waited for the punchline.

From elementary school to high school, I’d never had a single friend.

Blair had spent years making sure everyone knew that getting close to me meant crossing the Ricci family.

What I feared was the principal demanding to see my guardian on Monday.

Kevin’s parents arrived that afternoon. His father paid tribute every year to do business in my father’s territory; he knew exactly whose side to be on.

Kevin’s mother pulled Blair to her side.

“Blair, are you hurt?”

“A student like this shouldn’t be allowed to stay in school. Who knows what she’ll do next?”

With blood on my face, I thought that if my mother were here, maybe she would protect me like that, too.

Unlike my father, who wouldn’t even glance at my injuries.

When he got home, the first thing he did was check Blair’s face for scratches. Only then did he call for me.
