He Cheated, So I Drank the Love Potion Myself Chapter 29

The next time I saw news about him, it was in the financial headlines.

The headline read:

“Prominent Entrepreneur Reed Pierce Under DOJ Investigation Following IRS Referral for Suspected Tax Fraud.”

The accompanying photo showed him being led away by federal agents.

His head was bowed, all his former arrogance gone.

The article also mentioned that the person who had reported him was his former lover and assistant.

The two had apparently had a falling out over money.

His company fell into chaos.

When I saw the push notification, I was in my studio, editing client photos.

My finger paused on the screen for two seconds. Then I laughed out loud.

Good.

He brought it all on himself.

I put down my phone, opened a shopping app, and happily started picking out gifts for myself.

“Mm. First, a new bag.”

“Then a pair of professional hiking boots for the next time I shoot in the mountains.”

“I should also stock up on some better anti-aging cream.”

“And buy that new lens I’ve been wanting.”

“And while I’m at it, treat myself to a really good meal.”

As for my parents, in their desperation to help my good-for-nothing brother, they went around begging for help, sold off family assets, and their lives became a complete mess.

They tried to contact me. They called and texted.

But I had blocked their numbers long ago.

Later, they sued me, demanding I pay parental support.

When the judgment came down, I was ordered to give them four hundred dollars a month.

I’m a law-abiding citizen, so I pay it. Every month.

Not a penny more, not a penny less.

As for whether I pay at the beginning of the month, in the middle, or on the very last day possible…

That depends on my mood.

My photography work got busier and busier, and I was soon booked up six months in advance.

But I still set aside time every year for myself, to travel and take photos.

My lens has captured the deserts and sunsets of the Southwest.

It has also captured the autumn rain in New England.

With my own eyes, I document this world that I love so much.

And that’s about it.

One last time.

Love you, Ophelia.

See you tomorrow.
