I took a breath and looked up at her.

“Thank you for being honest with me. I understand your fiancé’s concern.”

“But I would like to say one thing. As a photographer, I don’t capture an abstract concept like ‘marriage.’ I capture people. I capture the emotions that two people in love reveal in a single, fleeting moment.”

“My marriage failed. I admit that.”

“But there have been many happy moments in my life. And I’ve witnessed countless moments of other people’s happiness through my lens.”

“My marriage not working out and my ability to find and capture real, genuine emotion are two different things.”

I paused, then continued.

“You decided to get married not because you’re certain the future will be perfect, but because you feel true happiness right now, correct?”

“So for you, happiness came first. Marriage was the choice that followed.”

“When I decided to get married, that hope and joy were no different from what you’re feeling now.”
