I scrolled up a little.

The conversation was mostly one-sided, a long stream of blue bubbles from me.

Asking where he was, telling him about my day, reminding him to come home early, waiting for a reply that rarely came.

His responses were few and brief.

I shut off the screen and stuffed the phone back into my pocket.

Forget it.

It wasn’t worth another thought.

After we ate, we rented a car and drove toward the cabin we’d booked.

Outside the window, snowfields stretched on for miles.

The monotonous hum of the engine, the white landscape rushing past.

The tension that had been coiled in my gut for so long finally began to unwind.

I leaned against the window and fell asleep.

When I opened my eyes again, it was already afternoon.

My friend and I changed into our gear and walked toward the viewing spot.

I put on my thickest down jacket, wrapping my scarf and hat tight.

I looked like a marshmallow.

But the cold still drilled straight into my bones.

Even the air I breathed in carried a sting.

On the way, we met a young couple.

The girl had an easy laugh, and the boy, quieter, was clearly devoted to her.

They chattered the whole way.

The girl hugged her boyfriend’s arm, her eyes bright.

“I heard wishes made under the aurora really come true.”

The boy lowered his head to look at her, his voice gentle.

“Then if we see it tonight, we’ll be happy forever.”

They leaned against each other, their white breaths mingling in the wind.

Watching them, I felt no bitterness, no envy. Only a quiet sense of rightness.

It was good that sincere love still existed in the world.

And I had come here for myself.

I had my friend.

I had myself.

That was more than enough.
