He Called at 3 AM to Move the Car, I Called 911 to Move the Body Chapter 12

Six months later, NorthRiver Cold Chain had found its footing again.

The Ethan Safety Station officially opened on the site of Unit 7.

Every vehicle entering or leaving at night now required dual-person verification. All cold storage alarms were synced to the police system. After night shifts, every female employee was driven home in a company car with a recorded driver and real-time route sharing.

I also contributed funds to build a mobile app with the city’s women’s federation and the police department.

We named it “3 AM Guardian.”

If you were in danger at night-being pressured to go downstairs, jured into a car, er followed-you could send a one-tap alert.

At the launch event, a reporter asked why I’d chosen that name.

I looked at the camera.

“Because at 3 AM, I received a call that almost killed me. I survived because I reported it to the police. I want every person who’s afraid to be one step ahead of the people who want to hurt them.”

After the press conference, a reporter asked about Brian’s case.

“Ms. Hayes, we’ve heard Brian Brooks’s original death sentence was upheld on appeal. Do you have anything

to say?”

I stopped walking.

“The law has already spoken. I have nothing to add.”

At 10 PM, I returned to the office.

The dispatch center was bright with light.

On the main screen, refrigerated trucks moved along their routes.

Uncle Zhao walked over with his thermos.

“Ms. Hayes, go home early today. Ethan always said that too–and then stayed the latest.”

I took the report from him. “He deserved to be yelled at.”

Uncle Zhao smiled, eyes red again.

We’d all learned to talk about Ethan without looking away.

He had lived. He had loved He had fought. He had been murdered. And we remembered him with all the

sincerity he deserved.

At 2:58 AM, the app’s backend flashed a red alert.

[Help request from anonymous user.]

[Location: Jinhua Community underground garage.]

[Message: My boyfriend called me downstairs to move the car. I’m scared. He keeps pushing me. Said if I

don’t come down, he’ll break up with me.]

I stared at those words. My fingers went cold.

3 AM. Move the car. Underground garage.

Uncle Zhao saw it too. His face changed.

“Ms. Hayes…”

I was already on the phone.

“Detective Vance. The 3 AM Guardian backend just got a request from Jinhua Community B1. Looks like a

potential lure.”

His voice was instantly alert.

“Copy that. I’ll coordinate with the local precinct. Sync the location to me.”

I messaged the user as I sent the data.

[Don’t go downstairs.]

[Lock the door.]

[Don’t open it for anyone.]

[Police are on the way.]

She replied quickly: [He says he’s already downstairs. He says the car is really blocking someone.}

I typed fast.

[A car can be towed. A life isn’t something you gamble with. Listen to me–don’t touch those keys.

Three minutes later, officers arrived at Jinhua Community.

In the garage, the so-called boyfriend was smoking next to a van.

Inside the van: duct tape, rope, sedatives, and two IDs under different names.

The girl was crying at home, completely shaken.

She sent me a voice message: “Thank you, sister. I almost went down.”

I set the phone down on the desk.,

3:09 AM.

The dispatch center was bright as day.

Uncle Zhao let out a long breath. “Mr. Brooks would be so happy if he could see this.”

I looked at the photo on the wall. Ethan stood in a white shirt in front of the first refrigerated truck, smiling

like an idiot.

I said quietly, “He’d pretend not to care.”

Uncle Zhao laughed. So did I.

Near dawn, I walked out of the office.

Ethan’s black car was parked outside. I hadn’t sold it after the case closed.

The driver, Xiao Zhou, opened the back door for me.

“Ms. Hayes, heading home?”

I glanced at the steering wheel. My chest still tightened a little.

I still couldn’t drive.

But I wasn’t afraid of the car anymore.

Or of 3 AM phone calls.

I slid into the back seat and set my bag beside me.

My phone buzzed.

A message from the 3 AM Guardian backend:

[Requests handled today: 11

[Police dispatched: 1]

[Confirmed safe: 1]

I looked at those three numbers and held the phone tight.

Ethan.

You were right.

I can live a good life. And can tear the darkness apart.

And I can tear through the dark.

The car pulled out of the company gates.

Far ahead, the sky was beginning to lighten.

I leaned back in my seat and closed my eyes.

A new day had come.
