He Called at 3 AM to Move the Car, I Called 911 to Move the Body Chapter 01

At 3:06 AM, my husband Ethan Brooks called me.

The moment I picked up, his voice came through the receiver, low and cold.

“Nora Hayes, come down and move the car.”

I sat up, clutching the blanket.

The line was dead silent. As silent as a sealed room.

I said nothing.

He pushed again: “Hurry up. The car’s blocking the fire lane. Keys are on the entryway table.”

I stared at the caller ID.

Ethan Brooks. My husband.

The voice was his, no doubt about it.

But in our three years of marriage, he’d rarely called me by my full name, especially not in that tone.

Something felt wrong. Was he drunk?

“Where are you?” I asked.

A two-second pause.

“The office. Just move the car. Stop asking questions.”

He hung up.

I checked the time. 3:08 AM.

My palms were sweating. But the next second, I dialed 9-1-1.

The dispatcher’s voice came through clearly: “9-1-1 emergency. What’s your location and situation?”

I swallowed hard.

“I need to report a possible crime.”

“My husband, Ethan Brooks, may have killed someone.”

“The body might be hidden in his black Rolls-Royce Cullinan in the underground garage at Crestview Heights. License plate: CREST-77.”

*****

The dispatcher paused for half a second.

“Ma’am, can you be more specific? Where is your husband right now? Who is the victim?”

I dug my nails into my palm. The pain kept me sharp.

“I don’t know who the victim was.I don’t know who the victim was.”

“But he called me at 3 AM and told me to come downstairs and move the car.”

“I think there’s something in the trunk.”

“Please send officers right away.”

The dispatcher didn’t waste time with follow-ups.

“Stay on the line. Remain somewhere safe. Do not approach the vehicle.”

“Understood.”

I hung up and stood at the entryway.

The keys were right there on the shoe cabinet. Black leather fob, silver emblem.

I reached out, touched them, then pulled my hand back fast.

Don’t touch them. The thought exploded in my mind.

I grabbed my coat and phone, locked the front door behind me.

Five minutes later, the community chat exploded.

[What’s with the police cars in the B2 garage?]

[Did something happen to someone?]

[Ms. Hayes, is your husband’s car blocking the fire lane?]

I didn’t reply.

I stood at the elevator bank, watching the numbers climb.

Ding.

The doors opened. Two uniformed officers and a man in a black jacket stepped out.

His eyes were sharp. He cut straight to the point.

“Nora Hayes?”

I nodded.

“Detective Vance, Major Crimes Division. You’re the one who reported your husband for murder and hiding a body?”

“Yes.”

He studied me for a second. “Lead the way.”

We went down to B2 together.

Ethan’s car was parked at the far end of A-section. Black, polished to a shine.

The property manager stood beside it, his face pale as a sheet.

“Officers, we just checked the footage. Mr. Brooks parked here at 11 PM. No one touched the car since.”

Detective Vance nodded to the tech team to pop the trunk.

I stood three meters back.

The trunk lifted open. My heart seized.

Empty.

Just a folded umbrella, a car emergency kit, and Ethan’s usual cashmere blanket.

No blood. No body. Nothing suspicious.

The property manager let out a breath. Then he looked at me like I was insane.

Detective Vance didn’t jump to conclusions. He had them check the back seat, seat crevices, floor mats, spare tire well.

All clean.

Too clean.

A young officer frowned. “Detective, there’s a disinfectant smell in the car.”

The property manager jumped in: “Mr. Brooks is a clean freak. He gets his car detailed twice a week.”

I almost laughed.

Ethan Brooks, a clean freak? He’d toss his jacket on the couch and shove socks under the bed for three years until I yelled at him to stop.

Detail twice a week? Bullshit.

I was about to speak when a shrill voice cut through the garage.

“Nora Hayes!”

My mother-in-law, Susan Brooks, stormed out in her pajamas, followed by Ethan’s younger brother Brian and his secretary, Wendy Miller.

Susan saw the police and her face twisted.

“What the hell are you doing at this hour?”

“Ethan is just fine, and you’re calling the cops on him for murder!”

Brian grabbed her arm, his eyes cold.

“Seriously, Nora? My brother puts up with you, but you can’t do this to him.”

Wendy stood there in a white cardigan, eyes red.

“Nora, I know Ethan’s been busy lately and you feel neglected. But dragging the police into this? It could ruin him.”

I looked at the three of them.

All here. At 3 AM. Minutes after the call, minutes after the police arrived. Mother-in-law, brother-in-law, secretary, every single one accounted for.

That knot in my gut tightened.

Detective Vance asked, “Where is Ethan Brooks?”

Susan shot back: “At the office. He’s in a meeting.”

Brian chimed in: “Right. NorthRiver Cold Chain Logistics had an urgent shipment tonight. My brother’s swamped.”

Detective Vance stared at him. “If he’s at the office, why did he call his wife to move the car?”

Brian stammered. Wendy quickly covered: “Probably property management called him first. He couldn’t leave.”

I smiled. “Property manager, did you call him?”

The property manager wiped his forehead. “No, I was asleep. I only got a call from security after the police showed up.”

Silence.

Susan shot him a venomous glare. “What do you know? What if another resident complained?”

Detective Vance ignored her and pulled out his phone. “Call Ethan Brooks.”

Brian dialed immediately.

Two rings. He picked up.

Ethan’s face appeared on the screen. He was wearing a white shirt and black tie, his expression calm and composed.

“Mom? What’s wrong?”

Susan burst into tears. “Ethan! Nora told the police you killed someone! Tell them she’s lying!”

Ethan’s brow furrowed on screen. “Nora Hayes, what are you doing now?”

My blood went cold.

That face. That voice. All of it matched.

And I wanted to throw up.
