Detective Vance didn’t hesitate.

“Breach it.”

An officer brought over the hydraulic shears.

Crack.

The first lock snapped.

Susan rushed forward crying, but a female officer held her back.

“You can’t do this to the Brooks family! Ethan will hate you for this!”

“The word ‘come back’ hit me like a needle in the throat.

I wanted Ethan to come back.

Even if he called me insane. Even if he blamed me for ruining the company.

As long as he was standing right in front of me.

That was enough.”

The second lock fell.

The third broke.

The door slid open slowly.

Cold air poured out.

The shelves inside Unit 7 were lined up neatly. At first glance, they were nothing but rows of white refrigerated containers.

Wendy let out a visible breath.

She wiped her tears. “See, Nora? Nothing. Have you had enough?”

I didn’t move.

My eyes were fixed on the farthest row of shelves.

Those containers were packed too tightly. NorthRiver had strict rules—shelves had to leave at least twelve inches from the wall for airflow. Ethan himself set that rule. He always said, The goods can go bad, but people can’t afford to cut corners.

But the farthest row was shoved right against the wall.

I pointed. “Move those.”

Brian’s face shifted. “How much longer are you going to drag this out?”

Detective Vance looked at him. “Do what she says.”

A forklift driver was called in. His hands were shaking so badly he nearly hit the shelves on the first try.

I said, “I’ll guide you.”

One container. Two. Three.

Behind the shelves, a gray waterproof tarp came into view.

Underneath it was a long, unmistakable shape.

The whole unit went silent.

The color drained from Wendy’s face.

Susan suddenly lunged at the door, screaming, “Don’t touch that! That’s client cargo!”
