He Broke My Heart, My Family Broke His Empire Chapter 18

I smiled faintly.

“If he doesn’t even listen to you, how can you guarantee you’ll be able to step in for me if he makes another mistake?”

I looked directly into her eyes, where a flicker of panic had begun to show, and added, word by word, “You can’t even control your own grandson.”

Her face turned rigid, her elegant mask shattering completely. She sat in stunned silence for a long time.

My brother signaled for the bodyguards.

“Mrs. Ashworth, how much do you think your family’s dignity is worth?” Wyatt’s voice was as cold as a Boston night. “This divorce is happening. The Calloways will see to it.”

“My sister needs to rest. Please leave.”

The bodyguards escorted her out of the suite. Just before the door closed, she gave me one last, long look.

It was completely unreadable.

Julian continued to drag his feet, refusing to sign. He called and texted from different numbers, his tone shifting between threats and pleas, like a man unhinged.

I finally had enough and blocked every number associated with him.

My brother’s expression was grim.

“If he won’t listen to reason, we’ll do this the Texas way.”

Over the next two weeks, the stock price of Ashworth Investment plummeted. Calloway Group, along with several of its Wall Street allies, launched a ruthless, all-out assault.

*The Boston Globe* exposed Julian’s father for academic fraud and misappropriating university donations. The SEC launched a formal investigation into his mother for misusing client trust funds.

Wyatt was willing to burn through any amount of money to drag the Ashworth family into the ground.

The firm that had boasted a century-long legacy began to crumble.

On the day Julian’s mother was sentenced, the Ashworth matriarch had a stroke and was rushed to the ICU.

That same day, the divorce agreement was delivered to the Ashworth house once more.

Then my phone rang.

It was an unknown number.

When I answered, Julian’s trembling voice came through the line, practically begging.

“Clara, please. See me one last time.”
