It was still snowing outside.

But for the first time in years, my heart felt settled.

When this was all over, I would never again set foot in this cold, miserable city.

For the next few days, Julian appeared outside my hospital room every morning.

He leaned on crutches, his body still bandaged, and watched me through the small glass window in the door.

He never lasted more than a minute before Wyatt’s bodyguards expressionlessly dragged him away.

I felt no sympathy.

Because of the severe frostbite, my hands and feet had suffered irreversible nerve damage. The doctor told me I would never be able to withstand the intensity of professional equestrian competition again.

I could never return to the arena.

When Wyatt found out, he was so furious he nearly smashed a chair.

“Clara, that bastard still won’t sign the divorce papers. After what he did to you, he still has the gall to show his face?”

I lowered my head and cut into the Texas steak on my plate. It had been a long time since I’d had a taste of home.

“It doesn’t matter if he signs,” I said calmly. “There’s more than one way to get a divorce.”

Late that night, Julian slipped into my room during the bodyguards’ shift change.

“Clara! Clara!”

I woke with a start.

He was sitting beside my bed, gripping both of my hands so tightly I thought my bones might break.

“Clara, forgive me, please?”

“I only wanted to teach you a lesson. I thought you’d come back on your own. I sent people to look for you, I swear, but they couldn’t find you.”

He spoke in a rushed, frantic torrent.

“I already sent Felicity away. From now on, I won’t look at another woman. It will only be you. We can have a real life together, okay?”
