“What else?” I asked. “Tell me now. I’ll give it all to her.”

My calm tone seemed to enrage him. He clenched his jaw and shoved me out the door.

“Clara Calloway, you’re really something else.”

The door slammed in my face.

I fell heavily onto the cold hallway carpet, wearing only a thin silk evening gown. He had kept my suitcase.

A freezing draft seeped through the gaps in the corridor, and my body started to shake.

Gritting my teeth against the pain, I scrambled to my feet, limped back to the door, and pounded on it with all my strength.

“Julian! My suitcase!”

“Give me back my suitcase!”

My phone, my wallet, all my identification—everything was in there. Without it, I couldn’t even get a hotel room for the night.

But the only answer was dead silence, punctuated by a faint, quickly stifled gasp from Felicity.

Soon, the only sound was the howling wind.

My hands and feet quickly turned red, then numb. I knew if I stayed here, I might actually die.

I walked to the elevator, intending to warm up in the lobby of the Ritz-Carlton across the street.

But when the doorman saw my thin dress and disheveled state, he politely blocked my path.

“I’m sorry, ma’am.”

“Please,” I begged, my voice desperate. “Just let me warm up inside. Just for a little while.”

He looked troubled but shook his head.

“Ma’am, it’s not that we want to cause you trouble. But Mr. Ashworth just called. He instructed us not to allow any… suspicious individuals inside.”

I stood at the brilliantly lit entrance of the Ritz-Carlton and looked out at the city where I had lived for five years.

Only then did I realize I had nowhere to go.
