He Bet My Life On A Table And Called It Justice For Her Chapter 08

Thane snapped back to himself.

His eyes blood-red, he pulled out his phone and called the man who had handled my “placement” two years ago.

It rang for a long time before someone picked up.

The voice on the other end was thick with sleep and hesitation.

“…Sir?”

“Two years ago, I told you to arrange a place for Auden to recover.” Thane’s voice was pulled tight, like a wire about to break. “What the hell happened?”

The man froze for a second, then began to stammer.

“Sir, you said… you wanted Miss Marlowe somewhere isolated for a while. Somewhere she could stay until Miss Maddox stabilized.”

“But after I sent her there, Miss Maddox contacted me. She said you had approved it. She said Miss Marlowe needed a real lesson, and she gave us specific instructions.”

“She said Miss Marlowe almost killed her, so we should… break her as badly as we wanted, as long as we kept her breathing.”

“You know how men at the bottom are, sir. They don’t know when to stop. We followed the list she sent and built a whole casino script around it. Then we played it out for two years.”

“Miss Marlowe thought it was real the whole time. She thought she had been sold into an underground market.”

“And Miss Maddox specifically said to sever Miss Marlowe’s Achilles tendons. Said it was so she could never run back to you again.”

“The fight betting, the bidding, the inspections… all of it was staged by people Miss Maddox arranged.”

The man sighed.

“Those screams back then… even through the door, they made your skin crawl.”

“I mean, why did she hate your ward that much—”

Thane hurled the phone against the wall.

The screen shattered with a violent crack.

He staggered back until his spine hit the cold wall, then slowly slid down to the floor.

Breck Harrow, Thane’s right-hand man, rushed in at the sound and picked up the broken phone.

The screen was cracked, but it was still lit.

The cloud backup had opened by accident, and chat records began popping up one after another.

Photo after photo filled the screen.

A pale body chained under the glare of spotlights.

Close-ups of her being degraded by crowds of people.

And then…

The ruined wounds on both of her feet.

Breck’s hand began to shake.

Then an audio file started playing on its own.

Greer’s sweet voice came through clearly, bright with a poisonous laugh.

“Yes. Follow the list I sent. Don’t get soft.”

“Uncle Thane sent her in there because he didn’t want her anymore. I’m just helping him train an disobedient dog.”

“Money? Relax. The allowance Uncle Thane gives me is enough to buy ten lives like hers.”

The recording ended.

Dead silence.

Thane’s face went from pale to iron-blue.

Then all the color drained away, leaving only a lifeless gray.

His mouth opened.

A rough, broken sound scraped out of his throat, but not a single word followed.

He remembered.

When Greer had first been brought home, it wasn’t that he had never hesitated.

He had looked into those frightened, dependent eyes and softened.

He had thought it was only one more person at the table.

Auden was kind. She would understand.

He even remembered that in the beginning, Auden had truly tried to be good to Greer.

She had been the one to reach out first.

“Sir…” Breck said with difficulty. “Could there be some kind of misunderstanding? Miss Maddox has always seemed so sweet.”

“Misunderstanding?”

Thane’s eyes snapped up.

The look in them was so bloodthirsty and deranged that Breck took half a step back.

Thane laughed under his breath.

The sound was worse than crying.

“Greer Maddox.”

“So this is the snake I brought into my own house?”

Breck went completely still.

He didn’t dare make another sound.
