He Bet My Life On A Table And Called It Justice For Her Chapter 07

I watched him like that, and old memories rose from somewhere far away.

Back then, every time I got sick or spiked a fever, he dropped everything and stayed beside my bed all night.

He would test the medicine against his own lips before feeding it to me. Even the water I drank had to be poured by his own hands.

He had once given me more protection and warmth than anyone else.

I had depended on him more than anyone. I had trusted him more than anyone too.

He cried inside that room for a long time.

Long enough that rushed footsteps finally sounded outside the door, followed by a muffled argument.

“Sir has been in there for a long time…”

“Move.”

The door was kicked open.

Keaton rushed in, his face tight with panic.

“Sir, Miss Maddox is having another episode. She keeps asking for you, so—”

His voice stopped.

His feet froze at the threshold.

On the table, the shape beneath the white sheet was blinding.

On the floor, shattered vials and bloodstained gauze lay scattered everywhere.

Despair seemed to hang in the air.

Keaton stopped breathing. [感觉很奇怪,周远前面知道女主死了]

Then he spun around, grabbed Thane by the shoulders, and dragged him up. His voice twisted with shock and anger.

“Sir, you said it was just a blood draw for Miss Maddox. You said nothing serious would happen.”

“Then what the hell is this? What happened to Miss Marlowe?”

Thane staggered under his grip.

The corners of his mouth were still wet with tears.

Slowly, he lifted his head and looked at Keaton.

Then he gave a faint laugh. It was cold and empty.

“According to the physical report I had done on her six months ago, that amount of blood, with fluids and nutrition, shouldn’t have killed her.”

“But do you know what I saw just now?”

He stopped.

His throat worked hard.

“Do you know what her body was really like when I tried to save her?”

Each word scraped out from between his teeth.

“Ribs. At least five fractures, old and new.”

“Her Achilles tendons were severed by force.”

“Severe malnutrition. Signs of organ failure. And…”

His voice broke off. Red veins crawled across his eyes.

“Signs of at least seven pregnancy terminations. The last one wasn’t even properly cleaned out.”

“She was only nineteen.”

Thane shoved Keaton’s hands away.

His eyes were terrifyingly red.

“This is the place you told me was absolutely safe?”

“This is what you called giving Miss Marlowe a quiet change of scenery, with people to care for her?”

“This is what you called a small lesson so Greer could recover in peace?”

“What are you talking about?”

Keaton looked as if lightning had struck him.

He froze completely, even forgetting how to breathe.

Granger, who had been waiting outside and hadn’t dared come in, rushed through the door and hurriedly stepped between them.

“Keaton. Sir. Calm down.”

His own voice was shaking.

“Whatever happened to Miss Marlowe, we need to find out.”

He looked toward the covered body on the table, his face draining of color.

“How… how did she end up like this?”
