He Asked for a Divorce, Then Begged Me to Marry Him Again After I Moved On Chapter 09

I was worried Ethan might become despondent and jeopardize the upcoming funding round.

Fortunately, Ethan was not a foolish romantic.

After taking one day off at home, he returned to work as usual.

He simply never brought up Serena again.

The company reached another milestone.

We successfully secured our final major contract before the New Year.

That evening, a corporate dinner required both Ethan and me to attend.

Throughout this period, we maintained our practice of ignoring each other.

Inside the private dining room, Mr. Yang, the client representative, kept his eyes lingering on me.

“I must say, Claire looks remarkably like my first love.”

Someone quickly chimed in.

“Since you put it that way, shouldn’t COO Bennett stand up and raise a glass to Mr. Yang?”

Holding my glass, I had just stood up when another voice shouted.

“Hey, how about sharing an arms-linked toast? Consider it making up for Mr. Yang’s regret of not marrying his first love!”

I stood frozen in place, unable to advance or put my glass down gracefully.

A moment later, before the atmosphere turned entirely awkward, I pulled back my chair, intending

to walk over to Mr. Yang.

Ethan stood up ahead of me and pushed me back down into my seat.

Mr. Yang’s face darkened. “What is the meaning of this, Mr. Hayes?”

Ethan walked over to Mr. Yang and poured himself a full glass of hard liquor.

“Her alcohol tolerance is low.”

“Wouldn’t drinking with me be far more satisfying, Mr. Yang?”

Mr. Yang remained silent, intentionally making things difficult for Ethan.

Ethan didn’t seem to care.

He downed three full glasses of liquor in a row before Mr. Yang’s expression finally softened intoa smirk.

Mr. Hayes certainly knows how to protect a pretty lady.”

“I heard Claire is your ex-fiancée?”

Ethan twirled his glass. “It has nothing to do with that.”

“I would do the same for any female employee in our company.”

By the end of the event, Ethan was heavily intoxicated, barely able to keep his balance while

walking.

My assistant struggled to support his weight.

“Claire, can you help me get Ethan home?”

Ethan was usually selective about drinking at business dinners.

Clients valued his technical genius and rarely pushed him.

Tonight, he had stepped in on my behalf.

I had no reason to abandon him.

I walked over, supported his other side, and helped the assistant bring him back to his apartment.

The assistant added, “I’ll check the kitchen for honey and mix a glass of warm honey water to help

him sober up.”

Several windows were propped open.

I walked over to close them when my wrist was suddenly grabbed.

Ethan was lying on the couch with his eyes half-closed, his voice thick with alcohol.

“Claire… I’m sorry.”

“I never truly believed you were the one who spread those rumors about Serena.”

“After all these years, you know me.”

“That day, I lost my temper and acted like an idiot.”

His hand slipped down, gently wrapping around mine.

“I lashed out and hurt you with my words. I’m sorry.”

His voice was so quiet it sounded like sleep-talking.

The assistant’s footsteps approached from the kitchen. “Found it!”

“Luckily, there was still some honey left.”

I pulled my hand back, walked over to the windows, and shut them tight.

“All set. Let me drop you off, Claire.”
