He Asked for a Divorce, Then Begged Me to Marry Him Again After I Moved On Chapter 06

I took a cab back to the hotel.

At the entrance, I ran into Ethan and Serena, who had also just returned.

As I walked past the front desk, the manager called out to me.

“Ms. Bennett, we noticed from your check-in information that today is your birthday.”

“Room service will bring a fruit platter to your room shortly as a courtesy from our hotel.”

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Ethan pause and look at me in silence.

I thanked the manager and entered the elevator with Ethan and Serena.

Serena held Ethan’s arm.

“Ethan, let’s not come to Disneyland next Christmas. It’s way too crowded.”

“I actually really want to go skiing in Hokkaido.”

“Ethan?”

He snapped back. “Hmm?”

Serena shook his arm.

“What are you thinking about? Why are you ignoring me when I talk to you?”

The elevator reached our floor.

Ethan turned to Serena.

“I have something to handle. I need to step out for a bit.”

“Go back and rest early.”

“Oh… okay then.”

Back in my room, I spent two hours discussing follow-up arrangements with the client rep.

Just as I was preparing to wash up and sleep, a knock sounded at the door.

Ethan was standing outside holding a bouquet of flowers and a gift box.

He checked his watch.

“Luckily, I made it back before midnight.”

“Happy birthday.”

Fine beads of sweat lined his forehead.

“Sorry. I forgot today was your birthday.”

I was surprised for a moment.

“Thank you.”

“But I won’t accept the gift. We’re flying back tomorrow, and I can’t take the flowers on the plane anyway.”

Ethan looked at me. “It’s just a necklace. It didn’t cost much.”

“I’m not in the habit of wearing necklaces these days,” I declined politely.

He rubbed the gift box in his hands.

“The last time you turned twenty-five, I gave you this exact same design.”

“You said you loved it back then.”

On this day in our previous life, he had indeed given me a necklace.

Hearing him bring it up now made me feel as if a lifetime had passed.

To me, that felt like someone else’s story entirely.

I maintained my stance. “There’s really no need.”

I made up a quick excuse.

“I’m still in the middle of a video conference. If you don’t have anything else, I’ll get back to work.”

Ethan pressed his lips together, saying nothing.

After waiting two seconds, I closed the door directly.

Before falling asleep that night, I scrolled through social media and saw a post from Serena.

It was a grid of nine photos, with her as the sole subject in every shot.

The comment section seemed to be her college classmates.

“Did you go alone? Where’s your boyfriend?”

Serena had replied, “He has a lot of classes these past few days.”

So Serena and her wealthy boyfriend hadn’t broken up.

Even though she and Ethan called each other friends, I had a subtle feeling her boyfriend had no idea Ethan existed.

This could easily turn into a disaster down the road.
