He Asked for a Divorce, Then Begged Me to Marry Him Again After I Moved On Chapter 03

Carrying memories from our previous life, Ethan and I avoided several early mistakes.

The company grew much faster this time.

Still, not every tragedy could be prevented.

Just like in our previous life, my father passed away in November after years in a coma.

Although I had prepared myself mentally, my mother cried until her eyes were swollen.

I rushed home to manage my father’s funeral arrangements.

My mother patted my hand. “Why didn’t Ethan come back with you?”

I opened my mouth.

Looking at her fragile state, I couldn’t bring myself to say it.

Telling her right now that my fiancé and I had suddenly broken up would be a double blow.

As I hesitated in silence, a hand reached around and touched my shoulder.

Ethan stood there, looking composed. “Aunt Margaret.”

“There was an emergency meeting at the office, so I had Claire come ahead first.”

I paused and looked up at him.

My mother let out a sigh of relief.

“I thought something had happened between you two.”

“You’ve been together for so many years. Even if issues come up, you need to be patient and understanding with each other.”

“As for the wedding…”

I cut her off quickly. “Dad just passed away. Let me put off the wedding for a while.”

My mother nodded. “That’s wise.”

After leaving the hospital, we went back to my mother’s house together.

Throughout dinner and up until we left, Ethan acted exactly as he had before our breakup.

He responded to my mother’s questions while peeling a shrimp and placing it in my bowl.

My mother didn’t notice a single anomaly.

Once we walked out of the residential complex, Ethan’s phone rang.

“Ethan, where are you?”

“I baked some cookies for you and came over to your place. You weren’t here, so I punched in the door code and let myself in.”

Ethan’s voice sounded as calm and mild as usual.

Yet right now, he was speaking as if to a child.

“I gave you the code so you could come and go freely. You don’t need to check in with me.”

“I’m outside. I’ll be back in half an hour.”

“Hang out on your own for a bit.”

I stared at his profile, lost in thought.

He probably didn’t even realize how gentle his expression was.

Ethan genuinely loved her.

If I had accepted this truth earlier in my previous life, perhaps I would have agreed to a peaceful divorce, taken a sizable payout, and lived out the rest of my life comfortably.

We wouldn’t have ended up despising each other.

We wouldn’t have argued incessantly every time we were in the same car.

And we wouldn’t have ended our lives in a violent crash.

Serena replied over the line, “Oh, okay. I’ll wait for you then. Bye.”

Hanging up, Ethan pulled out his car keys.

“I’ll take you back first.”

Seeing that I hadn’t moved, he looked back and raised an eyebrow.

“Why are you standing there?”

“What are you thinking about?”

I snapped back to reality and spoke to him from where I stood.

“I want to stay and keep my mother company tonight.”

The key ring spun around his index finger.

Ethan said, “I have things to do. I can’t stay overnight here with you.”

I nodded. “I’ll be fine on my own. I’ll tell my mother you were busy with work.”

“Thank you for coming to help me handle things today.”

“In a while, once my mother feels a bit better, I’ll tell her the truth as soon as possible.”

He gave an indifferent response.

“There’s no rush.”

“I’m heading out then?”

I nodded.

I watched the man’s back disappear into the distance.

I wrapped my scarf tighter around myself, feeling as though I had let go of many things.
