Matteo went rigid, then slowly turned to face her.

“You’re lying. She told me herself.”

“She said that because she didn’t want you to feel insecure. She grew up in Boston. Her family is on a completely different level than you can imagine.”

The color drained from Matteo’s face.

Flashes of memory assaulted him.

When he first met me, even my plainest T-shirts were from brands he’d never heard of.

He’d had no money then, no understanding of that world. Only now did he realize none of those things had been cheap.

How could someone who grew up like that have come from an ordinary Staten Island family like his?

Maya looked like she was done with him. She gathered her things to leave.

But Matteo scrambled after her.

“Maya, please, just tell me Adriana’s address in Boston.”

“You two are close. You have to know. I’m begging you. Just tell me.”

His hands were trembling.

Maya’s expression was hard.

“Forget it.”

“Adriana finally got away from you and started over. I’m not giving you her address.”

Matteo had no response.

She was right.

Maya had probably seen it coming for years. I was the one who had held on, right up until the moment I finally let go.

Maya shook him off and walked away.

Matteo stood there, head bowed. After a long silence, he managed to choke out one sentence.

“Then I’ll go to Boston and find her myself.”
