The problem was Matteo.

He walked over and found the shattered bracelet.

He crouched down, picking the pieces out of the trash one by one.

At some point, Maya appeared in the doorway, leaning against the frame and watching him.

“What’s the point of regretting it now? She’s gone.”

Matteo drew a shaky breath, his voice low.

“It’s fine. I’ll get the bracelet fixed, and then I’ll find her. She’ll forgive me.”

“She once said her hometown wasn’t far from mine. I’ll take some time off tomorrow and go find her.”

“Don’t bother,” Maya said, her voice flat. “She was never from some ordinary, middle-class family.”
