He Abandoned Our Wedding, I Destroyed His Life Chapter 06

Matteo stood in the doorway, his voice tight.

“Adriana?”

Silence answered him.

He lunged for the light switch.

The apartment was empty.

My books, my paintings, my clothes—every trace of me was gone.

Panic began to crawl up his throat, but he still walked into the bedroom.

I had left it spotless. On the nightstand sat our only photo together. Now, only Matteo’s half remained. My side had been neatly cut away.

The background of the photo jolted his memory: our law school graduation day.

That day, he had sworn he would always treat me well.

Then we joined the firm together. Then he started mentoring Chloe. And bit by bit, I had been pushed to the side.

Matteo knew it was his fault, but he instinctively grasped for excuses.

Hadn’t he always made it up to me?

After the last canceled wedding, hadn’t he taken me to dinner at Gramercy Tavern?

The thought died as soon as it formed.

That dinner hadn’t been for me.

He hadn’t asked what I wanted to eat.

And when I’d said I didn’t like the shrimp, he hadn’t offered to get me anything else.
