Chapter 11 We Raised a Viper

Jasmine did end up marrying that man-and moving far away.

They started out picture-perfect-holding hands, whispering sweet nothings.

Then the bills piled up. The love didn’t.

Mom told Jasmine to walk away.

“You’re just trying to destroy my family,” Jasmine shot back.

Convinced that cash would fix their marriage, she quietly transferred $ 600,000 from their joint account.

When Mom confronted her, Jasmine just smiled and said, “You love me most, don’t you? And wasn’t that money always meant for me?”

Mom broke down sobbing.

Dad stood beside her, shaking his head.

“We raised a viper,” he muttered. “One that bites the hand that feeds her.”

But that wasn’t even the wildest part.

On Thanksgiving, Jasmine called Mom in a panic, saying she’d fallen and needed help.

Mom booked a red-eye flight that night-from Jinglu to Lington-only to find out Jasmine hadn’t fallen at

all.

It was her mother-in-law who’d taken the spill.

“Mom, my mother-in-law fell and needs someone to look after her,” Jasmine said. “But Theodore Finch and I are going to Yannhold for Thanksgiving-so could you just take care of her for us?”

The moment Mom heard that, the ground vanished beneath her. Ice flooded her chest.

Even when dad’s business went under and the family hit rock bottom, she’d never waited on anyone.

Aside from a miserable childhood, her whole life had been one long luxury.

After returning to Jinglu City, she came down with a high fever and was admitted to the hospital.

She called Jasmine over and over-always with the same plea: Come back and see me.

Just like I had as a kid, she craved love.

“Jasmine, I’m sick. Can you come back and see me?”

“Mom, my mother-in-law’s been obsessed with playing cards lately-I have to stay with her. I don’t have time to come back. You sound fine enough to call me, so it can’t be that serious. Stop making a fuss over nothing.”

She hung up-and just stared at her phone, blank. Then, out of nowhere, she called Annie.

“Annie, I’m not well. Can you come over and check on me?”

When I heard her ask-so tentatively, so small-I felt my chest crack open.

It brought me back to every childhood fever, when I’d whisper, “Can you hold me?”

And she’d look away, cold.”Go see a doctor. What good is hugging gonna do?”

Years later, I handed those words right back.

“If you’re sick, go to the doctor. What’s the point of me coming home?”
