For Five Years, He Took Revenge on the Wrong Woman Chapter 08

I sat in a private box on the second floor of an underground auction house in Providence, listening

as the gavel fell on one sale after another.

The private photographs of Silas and Caterina weren’t particularly interesting.

But the Serrano family had made too many enemies over the years by controlling the harbor and muscling in on the nightclub and casino business.

As long as the sale gave me some satisfaction, I didn’t care who bought them.

Liam sat beside me, glancing repeatedly toward the door.

“I’ve been a private investigator for three years, and this is the first time I’ve seen anyone build an entire auction around her ex-husband’s scandals.”

“Do you regret helping me?”

“No.”

He pushed a glass of warm water toward me.

“I’m just worried you won’t be strong enough to handle it if the Serranos storm in here.”

That day, Silas’s guards had abandoned me in the stairwell.

Liam had gone back for me and gotten me into surgery.

After I was discharged, I moved into the space above his private investigation office.

He gave me the only bedroom and slept on the office couch. To cover my hospital bills, he had even spent the money he had set aside for the next month’s rent.

So I decided to help him pay off his debts.

Liam’s phone rang.

He answered, listened for a moment, and handed it to me.

“Calista, what the hell are you trying to do?”

Silas’s roar came through the phone.

“I paid the tabloids for those photographs. I don’t need them anymore, so I’m free to sell them.”

“You’re welcome to bid on them.”

“Don’t you dare!”

The door to the box flew open under the force of a kick.

The bidding downstairs went silent.

Caterina’s face was flushed with rage.

“How can you auction off someone else’s private photographs? Your marriage to Silas is over. He doesn’t owe you anything!”

“Hand over the original files.” Silas held out his hand. “Do that, and I’ll let this go.”

“Pay for them.”

I rose to my feet.

“Or are you going to have the Serrano guards pin me down again? Our baby died because of your

men.”

Caterina grabbed his arm.

“Don’t let her guilt you with that sob story. You brought men with you, didn’t you?”

This time, Silas pulled free of her.

“Fine. I’ll buy them.”

He stared at me.

“I’m marrying Caterina. Do you regret it?”

I almost laughed.

“I do.”

Something brightened in his eyes, but I continued before he could speak.

“I regret not divorcing you sooner. Congratulations on the wedding.”

I casually slipped my hand around Liam’s arm.

“I’ll deliver your wedding gift personally.”

Liam stiffened slightly but didn’t pull away.

Silas watched us, his expression growing darker by the second.

Once, he would lose control if another man came within a few feet of me.

Now I could calmly congratulate him on marrying someone else.

After we left the auction house, Liam asked, “What did Caterina threaten you with back there?”

“You’ll find out at the wedding.”

I released his arm, though I could still feel his warmth in my palm.

Three days later, the wedding was held at an old church in Newport.

Several New England crime families sent representatives, and the event was even grander than my wedding to Silas had been.

I entered with my arm linked through Victoria’s. Liam walked beside us.

The moment Silas saw him, his face darkened.

“Mother, this is my wedding. Why did you bring someone who has nothing to do with us?”

Victoria scoffed.

“As of today, Calista is my goddaughter in the eyes of the Church. Liam is her friend, so of course he has every right to be here.”

I looked at Silas.

“Besides, you’re about to see quite a show.”

“Don’t you have any family of your own, Ms. Orsini? Do you have to cling to Victoria?”

Caterina approached, lifting the skirt of her wedding gown, her eyes filled with hostility.

I smiled without humor.

“I have you to thank for that, Vito De Luca’s daughter.”
