A week later, we had our first project presentation.

My part got bumped to the front at the last minute.

Before I went onstage, the project lead asked, “Nervous?”

“A little.”

“First time?”

“Yeah.”

He handed me the laptop.

“Take your time. Nobody’s going to bite your head off if you mess up.

I couldn’t help smiling.

The presentation went better than I’d expected.

Afterward, the lead said, “This plan works.”

“Not bad for your first week.”

A few people in the conference room applauded.

As I sat down, my phone buzzed in my pocket. Felix.

[I’m outside your office.]

I stared at it for a second.

He actually came. Standing outside the lobby.

It’d been a week, but he looked wrecked.

He was holding a paper bag.

When he saw me, he froze for a second.

“You cut your hair?”

“Yeah.”

I’d only trimmed it a little.

Felix had never noticed things like that before.

He held out the bag.

“You left these in the car.”

My hat. My jacket. And a pen I’d spent forever looking for.

I glanced inside.

“Keep them.”

“What am I supposed to do with them?”

“Throw them away.”

His face fell.

“Rae. Do you really have to be like this?”

I looked up at him.

“Like what?”

He opened his mouth, then swallowed his anger.

“Fine. I’m not here to fight with you.”

“I’ve been thinking a lot. I know I messed some things up.

He paused. “But we were together for two years.”

“You can’t seriously not give me a chance.”

I asked, “To do what?”

“To change.”

“You think I favored Pearl, right? I’ll watch it from now on.”

I looked at him.

“Felix, you still don’t get it.”

He frowned. “Then tell me. What exactly don’t I get?”

“It’s not about you doing less for Pearl. I don’t need you to prove who matters more.”

“I just don’t want this anymore.”

He went still.

I pointed at the paper bag in his hand.

“Take it back.”

“I’ve already got new stuff!

He looked down at the hat.

For a long time, he didn’t move.

He used to think that if I lost something, he could just buy me another one.

Now he was finally realizing that some things could actually be replaced.
