Five People Traveled With Four Seats, Then They Panicked When I Left Chapter 07

On the third night, Pearl called me.

I hesitated for a few seconds before answering.

Her voice was soft. “Rae, are you mad at me too?”

“No.”

“Don’t be like that.” She sounded flustered. “The more you say you’re not mad, the worse I feel.”

I said nothing.

After a pause, she finally said, “I actually knew.”

“Knew what?”

“That they always took my side instead of yours.”

Now I was the quiet one.

Pearl took a breath.

“Whenever we went out to eat, they always asked me what I wanted first.”

“They always took my pictures first.”

“If I said I was tired, they’d stop.”

“Sometimes I knew it wasn’t fair to you.”

I asked, “Then why didn’t you say anything?”

A long silence.

“Because…” she paused. “being taken care of felt good,”

She was being honest. Honest enough that I couldn’t even be mad.

She quickly added, “But I never meant to take anything away from you.”

“Felix, too.”

“When you two were together, I never wanted anything with him.”

“I know.” I cut her off. “Pearl, I didn’t leave because you took anything from me.”

Her voice dropped. “Then why are you leaving?”

I looked out the window.

Peuple were still working late at the office downstairs.

“One winter, the five of us went camping.”

“You said your feet were cold.”

“The other three gave you all their hand warmers.”

“I froze all night. Didn’t sleep.”

Pearl didn’t say anything..

“The next morning, you asked why I looked so pale.”

“I said I was fine. And you just believed it.”

I could hear her breathing softly on the other end.

She finally asked, “So you’re done with me too?”

I didn’t answer right away.

We’d known each other for more than ten years.

She’d cried with me, stood up for me.

Not all of it was fake.

But the good memories were real. So were the times she’d looked away.

I only said, “Pearl, I don’t want things to go back to how they were.”

She started crying. Not loudly.

She just kept saying, “I’m sorry.”

I listened for a while.

“Get some sleep. Bye.”

Before we hung up, she asked, “Rae, can we still be friends?”

I looked at her name on my screen.

“Maybe someday.”

I hung up.

Then I left the group chat.

A system notification popped up.

No big ceremony.

Nobody could stop me.

I just suddenly realized.

I didn’t need that group anymore.
