Fiancé?Sorry, My Memory Was Wiped Chapter 05

Evelyn’s PTSD kept flaring up.

Between that and Belladonna’s relentless operations, Marcus barely had time to breathe.

He knew the punishment that night had hurt Shade.

But he was even more certain of one thing.

They’d spent ten years surviving countless firefights together.

What they had was forged in blood and death.

Eventually, she’d understand him.

Making up was inevitable.

He told himself that over and over.

Finally, he found time to visit Shade’s safe house.

He pressed his thumb to the scanner.

A harsh error tone sounded.

[Access credentials permanently revoked.]

Something cold twisted in his gut.

Marcus drew a deep breath and straightened his collar.

Then he knocked.

“Shade, it’s me.”

“We need to talk.”

The door opened.

A man in a Logistics Division cleanup uniform looked out.

His eyes flicked to the command insignia on Marcus’s shoulder.

He looked surprised, then immediately reported,

“Underboss Hale, Shade completed all access-revocation and property-clearance procedures five days ago.”

“The Logistics Division has reclaimed this safe house.”

The unease inside Marcus spread fast.

“Where was she deployed?”

The site-recovery staff member shook his head.

“Shade’s file status was changed to permanent discharge.”

“No one knows where she went except the big boss.”

Marcus could barely breathe.

He didn’t even remember how he got back to his place.

Evelyn immediately rose from the bed in her nightgown.

Her face wore a perfectly measured look of concern.

She’d been staying there lately, claiming she didn’t feel safe alone.

“Marc, you’re back…”

“Where did you go?”

Marcus looked at the fragile, helpless girl in front of him.

For the first time, irritation rose from somewhere deep inside him.

He used to think Shade was too independent.

That she never depended on him enough.

But now, Evelyn’s dependence felt…

Disgusting.

Suffocating.

“I went to find Shade.”

Something flickered in Evelyn’s eyes.

Then she slipped her arm through his with practiced concern.

“She didn’t give you trouble, did she?”

“You have to be careful. Shade can be… pretty extreme.’

“If she still won’t forgive us, I can go apologize to her.”

Her eyes reddened again.

“No.”

Marcus weakly waved her off.

He felt too drained even to speak.

“She…”

“I think she’s gone.”

Evelyn nearly screamed.

She carefully studied his face.

Then forced down the wild joy threatening to burst from her chest.

She put on an innocent expression.

“Gone?”

“Did the big boss send her on some new long-term undercover assignment?”

Marcus shook his head.

This was a man who had never backed down from bloodshed or gunfire.

Now his eyes were red.

His voice cracked despite his effort to control it.

“No…”

“She disappeared.”

“She didn’t leave a single message.”

All the strength seemed to leave his body.

He dropped onto the couch and buried both hands in his hair.

Shade was really gone.

She wasn’t throwing a tantrum.

She wasn’t leaving temporarily.

She had cut every connection.

Then vanished from his world in a way even he couldn’t trace.

Panic unlike anything he’d ever known closed around his heart.

For ten years, he’d grown used to having Shade in his life.

She had become part of him.

Like his own bones.

If she was really gone…

How was he supposed to live without her?
