“Marcus, what gives you the right to do this to me?”

He turned and walked out.

The door slammed shut behind him.

He drove several needle-thin electrode probes into the back of my neck and my temples with

clinical precision.

He leaned down.

A vicious laugh slipped from behind his mask.

“Shade, someone specifically asked me to take good care of you.”

“Don’t worry.”

“I promise there won’t be a single mark on your body.”

Agony exploded through me.

There were no words for it.

It felt like thousands of red-hot needles ripping through my nerves.

“Get some rest for now.”

He followed behind me.

Every word scraped across my already shattered nerves.

Then Evelyn’s scream tore through the hallway.

“Marc!”

“Where are you?”

“I’m scared!”

Marcus stopped.

He looked at me.

In the end, he only said,

“Get back to your room yourself.”

“And don’t cause any more trouble.”

Then he turned without hesitation.

He ran toward her voice.

At the same moment, my comms unit lit up.

The final transfer had cleared.

I forced myself through the pain and walked out of the building.

I hailed a cab.
