Farewell, My Don Chapter 05

Farewell, My Don Chapter 05

I spent the next few days focused on recovering in the hospital.

Dominic visited a few times, bringing expensive supplements and flowers, but he never stayed long.

His phone rang constantly, pulling him away.

I nodded in response to everything he said, and he would always look at me with a helpless, forced smile.

On the day of my discharge, Dominic brought offerings, and we drove to the cemetery on the outskirts of the city.

Watching the familiar scenery blur past the window, a sense of absurdity washed over me.

Five years.

This was the first time Dominic had come to pay respects at my mother’s grave in his capacity as my husband.

The cemetery was silent, with a light breeze rustling through the pines.

Dominic stood before the tombstone, staring at the photo of the woman who looked so much like me, and remained silent for a long time.

“Mom,” he said, his voice raspy, “I’m sorry it took me so long to visit. I promise I will take good care of Genevieve from now on. I won’t let her suffer anymore.”

I stared at the gentle smile on my mother’s tombstone, my expression numb.

Mom, did you hear that? The man I’ve loved for ten years says he will take care of me from now on.

But it’s too late. I no longer need his care.

After the visit, Dominic took me to the restaurant I had always wanted to go to.

A French restaurant where it was nearly impossible to get a reservation.

I had mentioned it to him many times before, but he was always too busy.

Today, he had booked the entire restaurant and arranged a candlelit dinner.

“I remember you saying you wanted to come here,” Dominic said, pulling out a chair for me. “Give it a try. Tell me if you like it.”

I sat down and looked at the exquisite food spread across the table, but my heart felt like a void.

Halfway through the meal, Dominic’s phone rang again.

It was Amara.

Her voice was thick with anger, sharp and piercing; I could hear it clearly.

“Dominic! You spent days meticulously planning a grand birthday party for me, and yet you didn’t even show up?!”

Dominic frowned and glanced at me. I pretended not to hear and focused on cutting my steak.

“I’m busy,” Dominic said lowly.

“Busy with what? Nothing is more important than my birthday! You have to come to my party right now, or I won’t celebrate at all!”

Dominic sighed and hung up the phone.

He looked at me, seemingly prepared to explain.

I set down my knife and fork.

“Let’s go,” I said. “I’m finished anyway.”

“Genevieve, Amara just got back. She wanted to gather all her friends, but she didn’t know how to organize the party, so I helped her. That’s all,” Dominic explained, his tone urgent. “I have no other intentions.”

“I know,” I nodded. “I understand.”

That phrase appeared again.

A flash of irritation flickered in Dominic’s eyes.

“I’ll take you with me,” he said suddenly. “The party is nearby. We’ll just show our faces and leave; consider it a chance to get some fresh air.”

I tried to refuse, but Dominic had already stood up.

“Let’s go.”

Amara’s birthday party was held in the ballroom of a luxury hotel.

By the time Dominic and I arrived, the ballroom was already packed with people.

Amara, wearing a red gown like a proud peacock, was surrounded by a group of admirers.

Her eyes lit up when she saw Dominic.

She lifted her skirt and ran over, linking her arm through his, completely ignoring me.

“Dominic! You’re finally here!” she said excitedly.

“Amara,” Dominic frowned, trying to pull his arm away.

“Dominic, dance with me! The first dance!” she pleaded with a pout, “You haven’t danced with me in so long.”

Dominic looked at me.

I was staring at a painting on the wall, pretending to be very interested.

“Genevieve…” he said hesitantly.

“Go ahead,” I said. “I’m going to get something to eat over there.”

With that, I turned toward the buffet.

Dominic stared at me, dumbfounded.
