A knock sounded at the door.

Julian got up to answer it.

The moment he opened the door, Vanessa appeared.

Her eyes were red and swollen, glistening like a wounded rabbit.

Julian’s expression softened instantly. His voice did too.

“Vanessa? What are you doing here?”

She threw herself into his arms.

“If I hadn’t come, who knows what kind of lies Sienna would’ve told about me?”

“Did she tell you I killed her mom? I didn’t! I didn’t do it!”

“I only went because I heard Aunt Paula wasn’t doing well. I asked Claire to take me to visit her.”

“Right outside the door, I overheard Sienna and Aunt Paula scheming.”

“They planned to fake Aunt Paula’s death and frame me. That way, you’d hate me forever and they’d keep controlling your money.”

“Julian, you’ve been so good to them, and this is how they repay you. I was furious. I ran in to confront her.”

“And when she realized her plan was exposed, she tried to kill me!”

“Julian, I’m scared. I was so close to dying. I almost never got to see you again!”

Vanessa Moore sobbed into his shoulder.

He hesitated.

Then, finally, he wrapped his arms around her and whispered.

“It’s okay. I’m here.”

“I’ll get to the bottom of this. I promise.”

He looked back at me. His eyes were complicated.

Two women. One he’d loved for twelve years. One he’d kept for eight.

He didn’t know who to trust.

Claire Sullivan stepped up behind Vanessa Moore.

“Julian, I can vouch for Vanessa.”

“I heard Sienna and her mom talking about faking her death to frame Vanessa.”

“And the doctor who came in to announce her death? He was bought off by Sienna.”

“Aunt Paula isn’t dead. Sienna had her moved somewhere else.”

“If you don’t believe me, ask the hospital for the body. They won’t be able to produce it!”

Julian Carter was silent for a moment. Then he turned back to me.

“Claire’s right. All we have to do is find out whether your mother is dead or alive. That’ll tell us who’s lying.”

He called the hospital director right there and asked for my mother’s remains.

The answer came back:

“I’ve checked the morgue records three times. There’s no Paula Rhodes listed here. Are you sure you have the right name?”
