The screen went dark again.

The whole courtroom had been soaked with my father’s suppressed anger, my mother’s mournful sobs, and Declan’s furious roars.

I couldn’t understand why they were all like that. Had they discovered that the daughter and sister they’d loved most were actually terrifying monsters?

Sorry, but I couldn’t help it, because she really had been that rotten.

“Jesus. Helena’s a demon. Poor Hazel. Can you imagine what she went through?” people cried.

“This is horrible. I wish I could kill Helena myself. She’s rotten to the core.”

“Wait, aren’t Hazel’s so-called family even worse? Three years, three whole years living together. If they’d only listened to Hazel once, or done even a little checking, they wouldn’t be this blind.”

“Moon Mirror and the Alpha, let this family be stricken with illness, lose everything, be left with nothing.”

Declan hunched over and pressed his hands to his head. “No, this has to be wrong. Helena can’t be that bad. You all must have gotten it wrong.”

My father’s eyes were red as he looked at me, his face unraveling. “Hazel, is this true? Did you suffer that much when you were a child?”

I watched his face, shock and anger twisting it, and something in me wanted to laugh. I did laugh. Then the laugh broke and I cried.

“Dad, it’s true. Your biological daughter was trash, a nobody who’d been put through hell her whole life. Are you satisfied now?”

I watched my father’s calm expression tear apart, inch by inch.

“No, my daughter. I’m sorry. Father’s so sorry.” He sounded broken. “We didn’t know. We really didn’t know.”

“I’ll kill Julian! I’ll kill him!” my mother screamed.

She tried to rush forward, but once the trial had started she couldn’t get close.

“Hazel, my Hazel. It was all my fault.”

“My poor girl, your mother is so sorry.”

“What good is an apology now?” someone scoffed. “If the Moon Mirror couldn’t pull memories, your daughter would’ve been falsely condemned, maybe killed, before anyone found out.”

“I don’t know what’s wrong with you people. How could you be so biased toward an adopted daughter? Now watch it all fall apart.”

“Have some shame and stop crying.”

“You trash don’t deserve to be parents, nor to hold the titles of Alpha and Luna. Just go to hell.”

“Moon Mirror, Alpha, give them their punishment! Let them know the consequences!”

“Yes, punish them!”

Their pleas and curses filled the hall. Then the solemn sound of the gavel echoed through the room.

Under the pale, desperate gazes of my parents and Declan, the Alpha rose and announced the final result.

“Now, the verdict will be read.”
