Don’t Flatter Yourself, I Won’t Haunt You After Prison Release Chapter 04

The kids threw themselves into my arms, giggling loudly.

Their laughter killed Amarok’s anger instantly. He stared blankly.

“Velvela… who are these kids?”

He studied their faces, looking for any sign they weren’t mine. “Did you adopt them?”

The kids hated that.

My son crossed his arms. “I’m not adopted! That’s rude!”

My daughter hugged my neck tight. “Mom, why aren’t you home yet?”

Amarok’s face drained of color. His lips trembled.

“You… you found a mate and had kids?”

I smiled and brushed my daughter’s messy hair. “Yeah. They’re twins. Cute, right?”

“Who’s the father?” Amarok whispered, trembling.

“Someone from Valehowl Pack,” I said simply. I knelt to the kids. “Babies, this is Amarok Thorne—an old friend of Mom’s.”

“Hello, Amarok Thorne,” my daughter said politely.

My son pouted. “Hi, Mr. Thorne.”

Amarok stared silently, still processing I had twins. He watched us interact numbly.

“Mom, I built a castle with blocks! My teacher praised me!”

“Mom, I climbed a tree better than everyone!”

“Mom, can we go to the beach tomorrow?”

“We have to ask Dad. He promised.”

I smiled softly. Being with my family healed my old wounds.

Amarok’s dark blue eyes held so many emotions. “Velvela,” he breathed. “You used to have bad nerves and hated kids’ noise. I promised you we’d never have kids in our house, remember?”

The kids shoved leftover candy into my mouth. I tilted my head.

“Did you? I don’t remember. My mate and I love kids. They’re the Moon Goddess’s gift to me.”

I kissed both kids on their cheeks.

Amarok swayed and ready to say something, then his phone rang.

I caught sight of the note on his phone screen: [Beloved Luna.]

He stepped outside to take the call. Thalyn’s sharp voice came through, complaining loudly.

Amarok frowned, his tone filled with impatience. “I know, I know. I’m coming. You’re the pack Luna—can’t you handle this? Act like it.”

When he hung up, I smiled and said. “Amarok, it might rain soon. You should go home. Don’t wait to replace those brake pads.”

Amarok stared at me, no trace of his earlier irritation.

After a minute, he whispered, “I’m leaving… I’ll come back to see you.”

I watched him drive away and sighed, ready to finish my pizza.

Then I saw he’d left his moonstone necklace on my desk. Strong alpha pheromones still clung to it. A note lay beside it: [Take this necklace. It’ll keep rogues away from you.]

“No thanks,” I wrap it in a cloth. I called a messenger to send it back to Nightshade Pack.

Rain started to fall. I forgot my umbrella, so I called my mate to pick me and the kids up. He said he’d come right away.

I waited idly. I didn’t know another werewolf had followed Amarok’s scent to the shop.
