We made it back to the stronghold just as the sun dropped behind the mountains. My arms burned from hauling Vance’s unconscious body, and my shoulders.still ached from the silver pit. Elaine limped beside me, one hand pressed to her side where a branch had ripped her open during the fall.

I kicked the heavy door shut behind us and dropped Vance in the corner.

“Sit,” I told her, nodding at the wooden bench near the fire.

She didn’t argue. She peeled off her torn jacket and winced as blood soaked through her shir grabbed clean rags and a bottle of strong alcohol from the shelf.

“Hold still.” I poured the alcohol over the gash on her ribs. She sucked in a sharp breath but didn’t cry out.

My hands worked fast, cleaning the wound. “You’re lucky that net missed,” I muttered, tying t bandage tight.

Elaine gave a tired smirk. “You’re the one who almost got skewered. Sit,” she said softly, holdin up a fresh bandage.

“I heal fast, Elaine. I don’t need-”

“Sit down, Fenris,” she repeated, her voice leaving no room for argument.

I swallowed my protest and sat on a stool in front of her. She leaned in, dipping the cloth into the water and gently dabbing at the silver burns on my forearms.

The moment her bare fingers brushed against my skin, a jolt of electricity shot straight up my spine. Inside my head, Liam went completely wild. He threw himself against the boundaries of my mind, his mental voice deafening.

I choked on my breath, gripping the edges of the stool so hard the wood cracked. The mate bond. It was impossible. She was a human. She was Ethan’s ex-wife. But a Lycan’s wolf never lied.

Elaine froze, her eyes widening as she looked up at me. She felt the spark too, even if she didn’t understand what it meant. Her breath hitched, her gaze dropping to my lips. For a second, the space between us shrunk to nothing. I wanted to reach out, to pull her into my lap and let Liam have his way.

But I forced myself to draw back, breaking the contact. I couldn’t do that to her. She had just escaped a monster who treated her like property. She needed an ally, not another wolf claim ownership over her body.

“Hold still.” She dabbed at the silver burns on my wrists. Her touch was careful and steady. Liam paced circles inside me.

A loud knock rattled the door.

We both tensed. I grabbed my knife and cracked the door open. One of my scouts, Jax, stood there breathing hard, face pale.

“More news,” he said, stepping inside. “Ethan’s put a bounty on both of you. Alive or dead. Pa members who bring proof get rank upgrades. He’s even calling in outsiders.”

My jaw locked. “He’s burning every bridge.”

Jax nodded. “And an Omega with him is spreading it. Telling everyone the Moon Goddess is punishing the pack because of the “human whore.” The pack’s split, but fear’s winning.”

Elaine stood up slowly, ignoring the fresh blood seeping through her bandage. “Let her call m whatever she wants. I’ve got the bank records. The silver deals. We hit him with proof at the Gala and watch his world burn. Once the pack sees he’s a liar who can’t even leave the territory and imprisoned them with himself, he’ll be skewered. We just have to survive until then.”

“You sure you want to walk into that fire?” I asked quietly.

Her gaze met mine. “We’re in this together, remember? No backing out now.”

I gave a short nod. I wouldn’t stop her. But I’d be right beside her the whole time.

The next morning, I was sharpening blades in the courtyard when the first howl ripped through the trees. Then another. And another.

“Raid!” I roared.

Elaine burst out of the main hall, knife already in her hand. We barely had time to form up before a pack of wolves smashed through the outer gate with him leading. Ten wolves, all shifted and eyes glowing.

She dodged a wolf’s lunge and drove her knife into its shoulder, twisting hard. The wolf yelped and fell back.

I broke free from them and sprinted after Marcus, but he was faster.

He backhanded her across the chest with everything he had. The crack echoed through the forest. Elaine flew ten feet and slammed into the stone wall. She crumpled, blood pouring from her mouth.

“No!” I roared.

Marcus didn’t stop. He shifted back into his human form mid-stride, his face twisted in a cruel grin. He walked up to her broken body and delivered a brutal kick straight into her abdomen. The force of the blow echoed through the yard. Elaine let out a choked gasp of blood and went completely limp.

“Trophy secured,” Marcus sneered, reaching down to grab her hair.

Rage exploded inside me. Liam took over completely. I roared, tearing across the yard like a shadow. Marcus looked up just in time to see my jaws. I slammed into him, my claws ripping through his iron armor and tearing deep into his chest. He shricked, throwing me off, but the damage was done. He was bleeding heavily.

I knew the risks. The fever could kill her. The venom could burn her alive if her spirit wasn’t ready. But watching her bleed out on the cold stone, I realized something worse.

I couldn’t lose her.

I pulled her into my lap, cradling her head. “This is gonna hurt like hell,” I whispered. “But you’re not dying today.”
