Boyfriend Dumped Me for “Heiress” BFF? Your New Girl Calls ME “Boss” Every Day! Chapter 13

We drove through the city. Streetlights flashed past.

Ethan pulled into his parents’ place. Every window glowed warm.

He parked. I got out and followed him up.

The door burst open.

Mrs. Morrison practically tackled me.

“Mia! God, we missed you!” She squeezed me so tight I could barely breathe. “It’s been forever!”

Mr. Morrison came up behind her and pulled me into a quick side-hug.

“You’re too skinny, kiddo.”

Inside, nothing had changed. Same beat-up couch. Coffee table covered in clementines. Even that plant I killed was

back-alive this time.

Ethan went to grab food. His mom dragged me to the couch.

“Honey, how are you? You eating? Sleeping? Carter treating you okay?”

My throat went tight. I shook my head.

“Just tired.”

“We know what happened.” She handed me hot chocolate. “Your dad’s been freaking out.”

Mr. Morrison sat down.

“Your parents are flying back tonight.”

I almost dropped my mug.

“What? They’re in Europe-”

“They were gonna come for the wedding.” Mrs. Morrison’s face went serious. “But they heard about Carter and got on the first flight out. They’ll be here by sunrise.”

My hands shook.

“They know everything?”

“Everything.” Mr. Morrison’s voice went hard. “Your dad said he’s handling Carter personally. You’re getting what

you’re owed.”

Mrs. Morrison grabbed my hand. “Don’t worry. They’ve got this.”

Ethan came back with soup.

“Here.”

He saw my face and his expression softened. He set the bowl down.

“Eat something.”

I picked up the spoon. Heat spread through my chest.

For the first time tonight, I could actually breathe.

This. This is what love feels like.

Mrs. Morrison smiled. “Stay over. Your room’s ready.”

I looked at Ethan. At his parents. At how they actually cared.

“Okay.”

That night I couldn’t sleep.

My old room looked exactly the same. Same furniture. Same dumb cartoon pillows.

Mrs. Morrison really kept it like this. All these years.

But lying there in the dark, all I could see was Carter.

Every memory hit like a slap. Our whole relationship on loop in my head.

Carter and I met right after college.

I’d moved out to prove I didn’t need my parents. Got some tiny apartment, started working at an ad agency.

One night I was walking home after working late. A motorcycle pulled up.

The guy pulled off his helmet.

Carter Hayes.

He flashed this cocky grin that made my stomach flip.
